chinese drywall: This Just In -- Blogging Got Me Interviewed On TV Today - 06/21/10 09:33 PM
At 11:15 today my phone rings. It was a news reporter for Fox5 News here in Washington. She is doing a report on Chinese Drywall and ran across my blogs. She liked them enough to call me. "Can we meet somewhere for a taped interview? I want you to show me how you would go about checking for Chinese Drywall." She spoke with me for a while, I think to see if I could speak well without a teleprompter! Satisfied, we set up a visit for 1pm at my next inspection. It turns out that my next inspection was with AR's … (114 comments)

chinese drywall: Chinese Drywall Gas Emissions Chart - 05/27/10 06:50 AM
The chart below is a recent Consumer Product Safety Commission draft release of their testing of various manufacturer's drywall for sulfur gas emissions from Chinese Drywall.  All drywall tested was regular 1/2" drywall (from 4'x8' and 4'x12' samples) except for the one sample described as 3/8".  All the samples they tested were untreated.  Both Chinese and North American samples were obtained by the CPSC from various sources, as a part of its ongoing investigation.
Two symbols need explanation:
^ This sample was collected in China and is not believed to have been imported into the United States.

chinese drywall: Chinese Drywall - Problem Manufacturers Identified - 05/25/10 08:07 PM
An official list has been developed as regards the continuing investigation of problematic Chinese Drywall.  The list is important.  It identifies manufacturers whose drywall produces drywalls with emission rates of hydrogen sulfide 100 times greater than non-Chinese drywall samples.  Such levels are dangerous medically and corrosive chemically.
This list finally gives contractors and home inspectors, consumers and homeowners, who are experiencing problems with these various drywalls, names that they can look for on stamps in the back side.
A CPSC press release lists the following manufacturers:
* Knauf Plasterboard (Tianjin) Co. Ltd.: (year of manufacture 2005) China
* Taian Taishan Plasterboard … (11 comments)

chinese drywall: I Just Want To Apologize - 05/18/10 06:55 AM
Before we began an inspection the other day, the Realtor, whom I had not seen in some time, said, "Jay, I just want to apologize.  The last time we had an inspection you had some things to say about Chinese Drywall.  As I listened I thought you were crazy, that nobody would do that, and that you were a China bigot.  I was so upset with you that I could not recommend you to anyone for an inspection. Then lately I have been hearing the news and Chinese Drywall is a big problem!  You were right, and maybe even a little … (25 comments)

chinese drywall: Chinese Drywall - The Final Solution - 04/18/10 05:00 AM
Two things have happened in the past few weeks regarding Chinese Drywall.  I have been blogging about Chinese Drywall for two years, long before it hit the media or public conversation.  But two interesting things have happened recently which deserve comment.
In April 2010, in Louisiana, and what is called a "warning shot," and a "bellwether case," Federal Judge Eldon Fallon in New Orleans ordered Taishan Gypsum Co. Ltd., a Chinese concern, to pay seven Virginia families a total of $2.6 million to remediate defective Chinese-made drywall in their homes.  This is the first settled case of many that have hit … (97 comments)

chinese drywall: This Just In - Blogging Works! - 02/01/10 08:05 PM
I got a call this afternoon from a broker in a realty office that wants me to come to speak to their office about Chinese Drywall.  I have written many blogs on the topic.
Asking how this broker got my name she said she Googled "Northern Virginia Chinese Drywall Expert" and my name was the first home inspector to come up.
Tonight I did the same thing.  I come up #5 out of 10,300 possible hits!  Not bad...
All of that is because of my blogging on the topic.
CAN BLOGGING ACTUALLY GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE?
We suppose so!!
Hopefully … (23 comments)

chinese drywall: American-made drywall - 11/12/09 05:52 PM
At a home inspection yesterday on a brand-new house, my client was buying a home built by one of the companies that has installed Chinese drywall in the past.
They are having obvious problems because of that installation.
My client wanted assurance that there was no Chinese drywall in this house.
I was able to find a spot where the stamps were visible to show that this drywall, in fact, was American made!
While I cannot guarantee that there is no Chinese drywall in the house, it is a pretty good bet that there is none!  This builder likely wouldn't open … (6 comments)

chinese drywall: Update: Chinese Drywall - The Plot Thickens! - 10/16/09 07:27 AM
There are two interesting developments in the ongoing Chinese Drywall problem, and make no mistake, this is a BIG and growing problem.
The first is a new complaint center that has been started.  The Chinese Drywall Complaint Center wants to hear from homeowners who have had multiple air conditioning coil failures in homes in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, in homes with confirmed toxic Chinese drywall. At the same time, the group is saying," we want to talk with ethical, and honest air conditioning industry insiders, or repair technicians, so we can prove the air conditioning industry, and home builders knew … (9 comments)

chinese drywall: At Least We Don't Eat The Drywall - 04/15/09 06:58 AM
This is another difficult post to write.  Because of its content.  It is frightful, for which I apologize.
The beat goes on and on regarding the 500 million pounds or so of poisonous Chinese drywall.  It is affecting more and more homes, now estimated at over 100,000, and more and more people, and was apparently used for over four years.  Its damage continues.  If you missed my first two posts on it you can catch up here:

chinese drywall: Update - Chinese Drywall - The Lawyers Have Landed - 03/21/09 08:14 AM
Well, you knew this was coming.  The Chinese drywall problem is worsening.  As it does, people will be looking for more and more remedies.
http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2009/03/18/the-lawyers-have-landed-in-the-uproar-over-chinese-drywall/
In addition to the plumbing, electrical and air conditioner problems, people are now reporting damage to televisions, computers, microwaves, refrigerators, various electrical appliances, jewelry, door stops - this list will grow with time.  This problem will grow with time.  We import Chinese stuff all the time.  Our relationship has grown with time.  It is time we stop to rethink this trade relationship.
Do you think importers are going to wise up?  Think carefully...
And you knew … (16 comments)

chinese drywall: I Think We Need To Recall China - 01/22/09 04:44 PM
For a long time now, I am signed on to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to receive their emails. The send me recall notices. I told them which things I wanted notices on – consumer products, toys, tools, electrical, etc. – and they send me emails when testing orders a recall. I do it to help myself be a better home inspector.
Some days I get four or five. I get them nearly EVERY DAY.
I cannot keep up with it all! I do not know how the CPSC keeps up with it all! They must have a quillion employees. … (7 comments)
