connector clamp: Electrical Cable Improperly Stripped And Connected - 06/01/12 02:13 AM
Electrical cables need to have particular connections to be safe - they need to be clamped, and the insulation must remain intact and completely surrounding the electrical wires it protects. Often I see an electrical cable improperly stripped and connected. This is most common under disposals, but behind the dryer, I think, it may be even more important. Rubber insulation around electrical cables is very important. Look at any electrical cord. It is insulated! Most electrical cables have three individual wires inside - the hot black, the neutral white and a green ground wire. They are bound together and protected by

connector clamp: This Was VERY Disappointing To See - 01/31/10 11:28 AM
I was called and asked to do an inspection on a house being sold by an individual who is a practicing Licensed Architect and Class A Licensed Contractor. His company advertises "Design and Build." I was also told the house was quite remodeled and gorgeous. This could not have been a more disappointing inspection, given the build up. This is representative of the kinds of things I found during the inspection. My report was three times longer than the normal report, for having to write about all the improper and/or dangerous things I discovered while there. Inspectors will notice about seven

connector clamp: Peek A Boo Wiring - 10/15/09 04:00 AM
Anytime you have to find a hiding water heater, there are going to be other hidden surprises. Here is one. When I can’t see wiring, and other things I have seen around a house that give me pause, if not fright, I wonder about them, and want to know. I’m like that. So when I saw this cable duck under things stored in a kitchen cabinet, I wanted to see what I could. So I moved stuff out. And, after I moved out a bunch of stuff, this is what I found! Look carefully. Tucked away in that little cavity in

connector clamp: Another "Remodeled" Kitchen - And Another Wiring Disaster - 07/28/09 05:03 PM
Don't touch! The wires might come out, bite you, spark, burn - who knows. This house boasted yet another "Must See!" remodeled kitchen. New cabinets, new kitchen sink, new appliances including a new disposal and - OLD WIRING... You might have noticed that this wiring did not quite reach the new disposal in its previous, more complete form. You know, insulated, together, properly entering the disposal, safely held by a CONNECTOR CLAMP. Since the cable you see would not reach, it should have been connected to newer wiring inside a box. This junction box should have been secured to the

connector clamp: Return To HVACbithia - Take Two - 07/19/09 06:01 AM
Look at this photo and put on your CSI hats. What do you see? There are many things to see: 1. There is a properly-installed heat pump and level drip pan to capture any over flow condensation. 2. The drip pan has rust inside, which means there has been previously filled from clogging in the past. 3. The primary condensate line, with the purple drip on it, has a trap - very good! But the opening and the tube are 3" OUTSIDE the drip pan, so if there is dripping from the tubing it will not get captured. 4. The

connector clamp: Are You Connected? - 07/17/09 08:53 AM
I often do inspections on older houses that have been remodeled. This one turned out to be a pretty good one. There were a few things, there always are it seems. But this one thing stood out. This very new disposal was installed and they used the old cable to do so. While that isn't necessarily a problem, two things needed to be done. First, the cable should have been trimmed a bit to utilize new, smooth copper and get rid of the frayed material. And, second, they should have used a connector clamp and secured the cable to the drain
