fireplace chimney: When A Gas Fireplace Flue Becomes Home Sweet Home - 01/08/16 08:14 PM
When a gas fireplace flue becomes home sweet home.
And why not?
We all gotta live somewhere!
Even the birds.  And this is one fine home!
It's warm.
It's protected from the elements and predators.
It has four side doors!
And a great view.
If I was a bird I would think this is a special place to raise the kids.
However, a homeowner MUST BE VERY AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON WITH A FIREPLACE VENT BEFORE FIRING UP THE FIREPLACE!
This condition is an extreme fire hazard!
It was completely, completely full.
My recommendation:  it's so good to be able to see a gas fireplace vent and examine it for clogs … (10 comments)

fireplace chimney: Does This Look Done By Someone With A Mechanical License? A permit? - 07/26/15 06:01 PM
When I see things like this I have to ask myself - Does this look done by someone with a mechanical license?  A permit?

Let's think.
The chunky stuff is composed of soot and creosote.
Soot and creosote are a buildup of gases and "stuff" from wood that isn't heated up enough to exit the flue.
Instead it accumulates.
As it accumulates it gets thicker.
The fire department recommends that chimney flues be swept of such … (50 comments)

fireplace chimney: Can Fiberglass Insulation Burn? - 09/18/13 07:31 PM
I know, it's the age-old question:  can fiberglass insulation burn?
Not really, but there is a caution!
There are many kinds of chimney vents - masonry and metal.
One particular type is called a "Type B vent."  A Type B vent utilizes two different tubes - an interior tube which carries the heat and a surrounding tube which does not touch the interior tube.
The separation allows for the dissipation of heat so that what outer ring touches would not get too warm.
It is a safety feature.  This Type B vent is used for gas appliances (furnaces and fireplaces), … (43 comments)
