furnace filters: What Happens When The Air Filter Is Installed Backwards? - 08/05/15 08:14 PM
My client asked, "What happens when the air filter is installed backwards?"
That was an excellent question!
And this filter gave her the perfect answer.
What a disaster!
The HVAC filter is constructed such that one side has a filter material and the other has some form of material to strengthen the filter's structure.
The filter in this photo has a metal mesh.
You can also see that this filter has not been replaced since they invented dust.
But that is another issue altogether.
Installing the filter the right way the structured side is intended to prevent the filter material from getting drawn into the unit.
As the filter gets … (67 comments)

furnace filters: The AC Doesn't Work; The Heating Doesn't Work - What's The Problem? - 09/18/12 07:10 PM
If the thermostat is fine, the circuit breaker is on, there is electricity to the house and the AC doesn't work; the heating doesn't work - what's the problem?
Glancing into the return in the hallway might lend a clue.
We have many years of dust build up.
Now, people think this is because they don't use a good air filter in the HVAC unit, or replace/clean it enough, or whatever.

So, how can we prevent such dust build up in our ducts and forestall its accumulation?
First, there are two HVAC industry philosophies on household air filtration.
Second, there are many types of filters out there - ranging from disposable, to washable to electronic.  Some are very cheap, others quite expensive.
Remember, an HVAC system moves and conditions air.  The more it moves the more it can condition.  So air returns are … (64 comments)

furnace filters: Duct Cleaning And Air Filters (1 of 2) - 10/24/10 10:44 PM
I am asked by clients and Realtors all the time - "Is duct cleaning really worth it?"  I had an email contact just yesterday about this very subject.  So I thought a post would be worth while and instructive.
Well, you tell me!  Dust accumulates anywhere it can land.  As it accumulates many things can happen:
1.  It can restrict air flow, making your system's ability to move air less efficient, costing you more money.
2.  It is composed of more than just dust.  I say to my clients that it is full of "living organisms."  You should believe that too.
