improper venting: Where Oh Where Could The Dryer Vent Be? - 02/11/12 05:57 AM

Where oh where could the dryer vent be?
Sometimes you know a change has been made, but you don't know where.
This dryer vent has blown directly onto the AC compressor since the house was built.  That would be 1979.
A dryer vent should not be within 12' or so of a compressor.  Too close, as in this case here, and the compressor will draw in air while the dryer is venting its lint-laden exhaust.  That can load up the fins with lint, clogging them, and robbing the compressor and AC system of efficiency.  I have seen compressors look … (88 comments)

improper venting: Regular Fireplace Flue - 04/28/11 05:05 AM
Sounds like another boring post.  Just a regular fireplace flue, photo attached.  More or less ho hum.
So, have a look!  It's actually very nice.
The vinyl siding is not melted.
The siding also has a nice bead at the bottom, making it a mid-grade siding.  Not bad.
The flue is straight up and down.
There's a little garden, though somewhat unkept, to the right side.
Some storage to the left side.
All is right with the world.  Until you take a closer look!
I post this so when I show you the next photo you will know I am not … (34 comments)

Apparently Al Capp used it in a "Lil'Abner" cartoon in 1951.  "Evil-Eye Fleegle is th' name, an' th' 'whammy' is my game. Mudder Nature endowed me wit' eyes which can putrefy citizens t' th' spot!. There is th' 'single whammy'! That, friend, is th' full, pure power o' one o' my evil eyes! It's dynamite, friend, an' I do not t'row it around lightly! … (27 comments)

improper venting: Completely Remodeled - Must See Inside (#2 of 3) - 07/10/09 05:27 AM
This is the same house on the previous post and could probably take up a couple of chapters in a home inspection training book on things you hope not to find on a remodel.  This house could provide 30 blog posts.
Many rooms had been changed.  The master bathroom was enlarged by eliminating the linen closet.  They wanted a larger, more modern, double shower stall.  It looked nice, but sacrificing the only linen closet is not recommended.  It had a new vent fan and HVAC register.
The register blew no air.  The vent fan worked fine (I employ the toilet paper … (12 comments)
