Shopping for a new bandanna? You can avoid paying North or South Carolina Sales Tax on such a purchase if you wait until the weekend of August 5-7, 2011. No such luck, however, if you want to buy a handkerchief that weekend in North Carolina. You’ll have to make that purchase in South Carolina…which doesexempt a handkerchief from sales tax. Yes, the rules surrounding the Carolina’s “August Sales Tax Holidays” can be confusing, but the consumer benefits are enormous.

According to Wikipedia, there are four main types of barbecue in the United States: Memphis style, Kansas City style, Texas style, and Carolinas style. I will agree that the other three types are distinctive and enjoyable, but especially for those of us native Carolinians, there is no barbecue like ours.

11th Annual North Carolina Wine Festival this weekend.
The largest wine festival in North Carolina is this weekend at Tanglewood park in Clemmons NC.
Your ticket provides you tasting from all wineries, artist and crafter displays, great food choices and music all day featuring The Chairmen of the Board, The Band of OZ and The Plaids.

US Government to ban Mercedes
AP today reported that President Obama will sign into law today, a law banning Mercedes vehicles from being driven on US streets.  This after an overwhelming vote from congress in favor.
Unnamed government sources, close to the situation report several defections of top Mercedes executives to Hyundai.  This has not been confirmed or denied by Hyundai.

Lexington Barbeque Festival this weekend.
Well, it's that time of year again.  Yse pig, pig and more pig.  Pig statues all over Lexington, Pig sand sculptures, baby pigs, and of course the main attraction, Lexington style Barbecue.
It takes place in uptown Lexington, NC on Saturday, October 23, from 8:30AM to 6:00PM.  Admission is free.
Lexington has many barbecue restaurants and most participate by making barbecue for the festival.  For those of you not familiar with Lexington style barbecue, it's pork shoulder, smoked for around twelve hours, then chopped finely, added to a soft hamburger bun, with slaw and a little … (1 comments)

North Carolina State Fair opens today.
The fair runs from October 14-October 24 at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh.  Admission is $8.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 6-12, with children 5 and under free.
There are many games and rides and every kind of fair food imaginable.  There are tractor pulls and my favorite, the demolition derby.  Farm animal, produce, pie & cake and jam competitions, as well as art and quilt contests abound.

The Dixie Classic Fair is back!
Our areas next big fair is back again on Friday.  It is the 128th anniversary of what is the 50th largest fair in North America and the second largest in North Carolina.  It is held in Winston-Salem at the fairgrounds and runs from October 1 - 10, 2010.  Tickets cost are: Adults (ages 12 & up) - $8, Children (ages 6 - 11) - $4 and Children (5 & under) and Senior Adults (65 & over, with ID) are Free.
