Located in Worcester, the Higgins Armory Museum is the only museum in the Northeast dedicated to the study and display of arms and armor. From it's unique architecture to it's historic artifacts, it is a true informative and entertaining environment. The museum is housed in an Art Deco steel building and hosts one of the largest collections of arms and armor in the world. There are over 80 suits of armor from Medieval to renaissance pieces. Now we have a funny story to share about Wolf Swamp. James and I live on Molasses Hill Road in Brookfield and down the street there is the entrance to Wolf Swamp. Wolf Swamp is a 90 acre wooded site that slopes down to the banks of Trout Brook. It is full of trails and woods, old foundations and tons of streams and brooks. One late afternoon, James had decided to take the boys outside to blow bubble gum on the farmer's porch in the rain. Being this is day #50, it's only fitting that the Baseketball Hall of Fame, celebrating it's 50th anniversary this very year, be in this spot. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was first in a small building on the campus of Springfield College where the game was first introduced. The first baseketball game was played on December 21st in 1891. James Naismith, a physical education teacher, introduced this game to a class of 18 men. There are many orchards throughout Central Mass, but the one closest to our home and the one we visit most often is the Breezelands Orchards. Located at 1791 Southbridge Road in Warren, this wonderful orchard was established in 1896 by the Tuttle family and still is owned and operated by their family. Breezelands Orchards has more than 100 acres featuring over 8,000 fruit trees.

Glen Echo Lake is located in Charlton, MA and is a fully recreational lake. It is approximately a 116 acre lake. There is a portion of the lake where it gets narrow and locals call this "The Narrows". Because the lake is smaller, they enforce speed limits and boating regulations to help keep the lake enjoyable and safe for all. The Glen Echo Improvement Association was formed in 1972 and currently has 115 resident members. It costs $25/year to join and they help maintain the lake and do weed control.

Wachusett Reservoir is a 4,135 acre reservoir located in several towns (Boylston, Clinton, Hubbardston, Holden, Leominster, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling, and West Boylston). Wachusett Reservoir was built between 1897-1908 by damming the South Branch of the Nashua River. The Wachusett Reservoir still supplies some of Boston's water and gets some of it's water from the Quabbin Reservoir. James and I used to live in some apartments off of Frank Street in Worcester, very close to Lake Quinsigamond. Lake Quinsigamond, also known as Long Pond, is located on the Worcester and Shrewsbury lines. It covers about 772 acres and ranges from 50 to 85 feet deep. The lake is pretty long and narrow and stretches 4 miles long. Lake Quinsigamond has 8 islands, most are privately owned by local citizens. Drake Island is state owned and is the largest of the islands on this lake.

Funny Friday - Riding in the Petty Cab to Fenway - 09/11/09 12:20 PM
Will & James with their hair blowing in the wind on our way to Fenway Park. We took a "petty cab" ride to the entrance since our parking garage was about a mile away. You get to sit in this carriage type thing while a nice man on a bike hauls you to the entrance. They work just for tips and get you their quite quickly with some friendly conversation.

James and I love to kayak, although we don't get to do it much having 4 small children and a business, but someday we'll do it again. Close to our home in Brookfield, MA is the Quaboag River that flows through the towns of Brookfield, West Brookfield, and Warren before it joins the Swift River and Ware River in Three Rivers, forming the Chicopee River. Now that's a LOT of rivers! The head of the river is located in Brookfield, starting at Quaboag Pond. It's a great place for white water kayaking and canoeing. Moore State Park is located in Paxton, MA off of Route 31. It's a great place to visit to picnic, fly kites and walk around viewing the scenic landscape. Moore State Park started as a 400 acre retreat and then became a private estate and was bought by the state in 1965. Come witnessthe stone mill foundations, a restored sawmill and lots of mountain laurel, azaleas and rhododendrons. There are wooded paths, grassy knolls and peaceful waterfalls to enjoy. They are starting up the Fall festivities with a huge clearance sale starting this Friday through Labor Day weekend. Wachusett Mountain features 22 trails with 110 skiable acres for all ski levels. My oldest child, James Jr., started his first day of Kindergarten today at Brookfield Elementary School. He was very excited to get to ride the school bus, he was actually upset with me on his first day of pre-school last year when he found out I'd have to drive him! I didn't think I would be emotional today, but I was a very mushy mom when I saw him get on that school bus and drive away for his first day of school. My baby is growing up!
