Here are a few scenes from the Douglas County Park in Gordon, Wisconsin. It’s about five miles west of Gordon, right at the Gordon Dam. Upstream of the dam, you’ll find the 1900-acre Gordon Flowage, also known as the Saint Croix Flowage. (Not to be confused with Upper Saint Croix Lake, which is upstream at Solon Springs.) What the heck’s a “flowage,” and why is it called that??? Minong Flowage All over northern Wisconsin, the term flowage has worked its way into dozens of lake names. Here in northwestern Wisconsin, we have the Minong Flowage, Gordon Flowage, Chippewa Flowage, and Tigercat Flowage—and that’s just for starters. And despite the number of flowages in northern Wisconsin, people who live on any one of them can often be heard calling their home lake simply “The Flowage.”
So what exactly is a flowage, and how did they come to be called that?

The St Croix Flowage in Gordon, Wisconsin This post is in honor of this cabin I’ve just listed on the north shore of the Saint Croix Flowage, also known as the Gordon Flowage. At 1,913 acres, and with 29 miles of meandering shoreline, the Gordon Flowage is one of the largest, least developed lakes anywhere in northwestern Wisconsin. The Flowage is located near near Gordon, Wascott, and Solon Springs, and is just west of U.S. Highway 53. For your enjoyment, I’ve ended this post with some fresh photos taken at various points around the lake.

The Gordon-St Croix Flowage: a paradise for anglers, waterfowlers, pontooners, birders, and paddlers. OK. I’m biased. I live here. But if you’re looking for a lake that’s less developed, this might be the one.
The Gordon-St Croix Flowage is one of the best-kept secrets in northwestern Wisconsin. With its 29 miles of meandering shoreline, this 1913-acre flowage is one of the most pristine, quiet lakes remaining in the entire region. Here in NW Wisconsin, the winters can run long but not too often do we see this kind of snowfall this late in April
The yardstick shows 13" on the table. 15" measured on the deck. That lake in my front yard is the St Croix Flowage. The ice is still about 30" thick. Fishing opener is two weeks away.

“But I thought no one could build a house on the Upper St Croix River! Isn’t that some kind of Wild and Scenic Riverway?”
Indeed it is. But for whatever reason, the Wild and Scenic part of the St Croix River officially begins at the Gordon Dam; that’s four or five miles downstream from where I’m sitting right now. Unofficially, however, my own front yard is pretty wild and scenic.
