activerain: Reflections on an Amazing ActiveRain Zoom Call 3/12/2024 - 03/13/24 05:37 PM
My Reflections on an Amazing ActiveRain Zoom Call on 3/12/2024
In some ways this post about our Zoom call with Brad Andersohn was easy to write, but it was also a bit of a challenge.
It wasn’t that the topic is all that difficult to write about, but more due to all the emotions that arise as a result of what happened yesterday on the weekly Zoom call, and my involvement with the most amazing online community around since September 2006!
Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, TikTok…eat your heart out!
Sorry I did not snap a photo of the meeting attendees but there’s one in Brad’s … (24 comments)

activerain: A Shout-Out and Thank You for Michael Jacobs - 05/23/23 09:19 AM
This is a special shout-out and thank you to Michael Jacobs, a long-time AR member who inspires us to ponder so many things...in every post he shares!

Michael has, for years, shared thoughtful articles that take us on intellectual and emotional journeys we don’t expect, and perhaps don’t realize we are taking until we finish reading and realize how our thinking has been transformed or inspired.

There are always surprises in Michael’s thoughtful writing that invite us to open our minds to other perspectives and view points on life and business. Sometimes predictable, but so often not. That’s part of the enjoyment of … (31 comments)

6 Big Reasons to Love Living in Carlsbad California

Debe Maxwell, CRS  and Brian England  are co-hosting the February Challenge, and encouraged us to write about why we love were we live. So here goes.
I first met Carlsbad in 2004 on a house hunting trip with my wife and liked it immediately. I moved here in April 2005 after a year of exploring a number of coastal communities after we had made the decision to relocate from Boston. I had no idea how much I would come to love living here when we first moved in, but there are plenty of reasons … (23 comments)

activerain: I’m Grateful for Laughter - 11/20/22 12:13 PM
Thankful for Laughter

For the November AR Challenge Debe Maxwell, CRS asked us to write about those things we are grateful for. No doubt the gratitude list is long for each of us, and can easily exceed the 1 post per week that’s allowed.

So how does one decide?!

I wanted to write about something a little different, and not a topic I’ve written about before…so here it is.

I really like to laugh. Whether it’s something that I see, or hear, or read, or something from me personally, it makes me feel good. No, great! How about you?! I’m thankful for a good laugh…any … (18 comments)

AR Meetup in Maui

Meeting up with other ActiveRain members in person is always special. It might be a larger gathering. or maybe just 1 or 2 people. It could be planned while on a business trip or vacationing, or something impromptu.

In this case it was during vacation.

The Setting – Kumulani Farms Country Market Café at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Wailuku, Maui Hawaii, about 2500 miles from my Carlsbad home.

Who: Georgie Hunter, me, and my wife, Kay

My wife and I were vacationing on Maui this week and before we left I got in touch with Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089  and Steven … (16 comments)

The Art of Building Relationships on ActiveRain
~ More Thoughts ~

When I joined AR in 2006 I had no clue what it was all about. Nor do I recall any expectations of what might result from participating in this new online community and the relatively new phenomenon of blogging. Social media was pretty new and evolving rapidly. Who would have thought strong friendships could develop with those you meet online…OK, there IS online dating!

It became obvious very quickly relationships, and powerful ones, were forged on AR. That’s true today, perhaps even more so. I suspect many reading this will agree.

A Featured Image Does NOT Guarantee a Featured Post

Getting Featured on ActiveRain has been a big deal as long as I have been a member… and that’s been more than a few years. Seems to me we had around 6000 members when I joined.

I suspect most bloggers love to be featured....who wouldn't?! After all you get that beautiful gold star plus extra points, and plenty of recognition from your AR friends who comment which means even more points. And there may be some envy from your peers that YOUR post is on the Feature Board and theirs is not.

activerain: Featured Images - A MUST for the Feature Board - 02/04/21 08:52 PM
Here's an important change for all to be aware of...at least if you hope to have your feature-worthy post featured! And even if your post does not get featured that photo at the very top of your post will stand out. So choose carefully and make it meaningful depending on your topic!
And look for more changes on ActiveRain as they continue to make improvements!

Zooming in on Kathy Streib
May ActiveRain Challenge

Tuesday the 19th was the 3rd of 4 ActiveRain Zoom meetings in May, a time to hook up with your AR friends and learn some new things, too. And the 3rd opportunity for a post in the May Challenge hosted by Jeffrey Richman

And it’s a good time to practice your Zoom skills and good on-screen behavior.

This week there were 22 participants when I counted - it was fun to see everyone, including Lyn Sims , Silvia Dukes PA, Broker Associate, CRS, CIPS, SRES , Kat Palmiotti , Elyse Berman, PA  and Michael Eisenberg , with a few new faces, including Thomas … (19 comments)

Not only do you get to see and chat with your AR friends on the Zoom calls, and meet some new friends, but there is a speaker each week. Just think of all the benefits!

A Harvard Square Condo Conversion Led to Multiple Sales A Favorite Client in the Early Years

I’ve written before about my successes with floor time when I first started in the business – here’s another.

I started with RE/MAX Destiny in the Harvard Square area of Cambridge (photo is of Harvard Yard), across the river from Boston, when I was first licensed.

There was terrific walk-in traffic in this store-front style brokerage, and I took on floor time almost immediately. It paid off in spades!!

In 2004, about a year and a half after getting licensed, a gentleman walked in and being on … (9 comments)

The Spirit of Education is Alive and Well in the ActiveRain Community

As part of the 2018 Blog JumpStart Challenge we are asked to share our thoughts on the Weltanschauung, the guiding principles and philosophy of the Activerain community.

Of the various principles I particularly like the view that “ActiveRain believes that it is in the best interests of real estate professionals to build a community that is focused on educating one another.”

There are a couple of reasons why.

First, I am a strong believer in life-long learning.

It energizes me, it’s fun, it exercises the brain, and as far as being in … (37 comments)

Special Times with Special People
Another AR Meet-up Success!

We have been anticipating, and talking about this meet-up for a year, since a bunch of us met at the NAR meetings in Orlando in November 2016. And the moment finally arrived a couple of days ago in Chicago!!

It was mighty chilly and damp for this Southern California guy, but I mustered up the spirit, as a former New Englander, and braved the elements (a walk at rush hour was far faster than taking a cab along the river to the Sheraton less than a mile away) to hook up with some very special … (22 comments)

Summer 2017 ActiveRain Meetup
Carlsbad CA

This is not a TRICK but it will be quite a TREAT! That’s just a reminder about our last San Diego meetup last fall on Halloween in Oceanside, masks provided! But we shed them in this photo!!

We are thrilled that it’s time to announce our Summer 2017 meetup, the final day of the summer ActiveRain meetup season, taking place in my home town of Carlsbad, at Chandlers at the Cape Rey Resort on the Coast Road….so ocean views, if the weather is right, will enhance our time together.

activerain: Avoiding the Poof… a few work arounds for the photo issues. - 05/21/17 12:42 PM
Lots of us are finding problems uploading photos, especially the feature photos, among other glitches from time to time. While we understand these things are being worked on, it's nice to have some work-arounds to get you where you want to be.

Stop by Bob's helpful post to share your thoughts there, too! Hopefully you aren't seeing that nasty looking pooch!!

The Thrill and Excitement of Becoming a Blogger on ActiveRain

I still recall the thrill and excitement, and perhaps a little anxiety, when I first started blogging here on ActiveRain waaay back in late 2006. Perhaps you are feeling the same now that you have taken the plunge and joined us.

Blogging opens up an amazing world to you, a life-changing one – just ask anyone who has been here for some time. It’s a little scary when you first start, perhaps, wondering what to do, what to say, and putting your words out there for the world to see. But the more … (72 comments)

San Diego ActiveRain Winter Meetup at the Beach a Big Hit Feb. 2, 2016

Our San Diego ActiveRain Meetup today at the beach in Cardiff was a big hit. How could it not be with some terrific people, good food, great conversation and a beautiful setting on the beach with fabulous weather – such a treat after the tough storm this past weekend.

Bill Roberts, Melissa Zavala, Matt Brady, John Arendsen and John Meussner (all the way from Orange County to the north) and I gathered at the Pacific Coast Grill for 2 hours of good conversation, laughs and an all-around good time. … (42 comments)

Chobani Yogurt, the Streets of San Francisco, and Real Estate
An Untraditional but Moving Meetup

I had the great fortune to attend an ActiveRain meetup in San Francisco held during the NAR meetings back in November of 2013. I didn’t follow-up with a post or any photos, and my memory being what it is I doubt I remember everyone I met and talked with – rather embarrassing! Of course Bob Stewart and Kerrie were there, and I already talked about meeting Kathleen Daniels which was great fun.

Others I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with include Joan Cox , Alan May ,  … (18 comments)

My Top 10 Moments for 2015

It’s been fun to read everyone’s Top 10 Moments for 2015 – what a fun idea for a year-end challenge. Thanks Karen Fiddler!

Hard to believe we are now into 2016!

I almost didn’t do this. Not because I didn’t want to, but I sorta heard about it last minute and with family in town for the New Year, including grandkiddos, life has been hectic for the last couple of days.

But today we lost a very dear friend of ours to cancer, and quite frankly talking about the things I wanted to celebrate in 2015 just didn’t … (24 comments)
