We were out driving by a house in Cardiff that I hope to list soon, this past Sunday, and decided to take a walk at the Batiquitos Lagoon in South Carlsbad. We used to walk there regularly when we lived in nearby La Costa but since moving north to the Calavera Hills area it’s not been happening as often.
There was a pretty heavy marine layer, so no sun, which was actually quite nice for a walk. The photos, however, are not as colorful as they might otherwise be. Given it was (15 comments)

The Batiquitos Lagoon is a treasure, and efforts to preserve it are so important and appreciated by area residents. The Batiquitos Lagoon is in the Aviara area, bordering Encinitas, and is a wildlife nature preserve with miles of trails to enjoy along the lagoon with great bird watching. Fishing, swimming and boating are not (3 comments)
The Batiquitos Lagoon in South Carlsbad is a real gem, and a rare tidal wetland along the Southern California coast. We are indeed fortunate to have this lagoon and nature preserve, a designated marine protected area (MPA), to enjoy without boating, fishing or swimming…just the joys and beauty of nature near the ocean.
There are miles of hiking trails to enjoy with natural beauty every step of the way – trees, flowers, the lagoon, and abundant bird life. The far western end is by the 5 freeway so the road noise does mar (5 comments)

Join the Batiquitos Lagoon Kayak Cleanup in Carlsbad CA September 25 and 26, 2010 The 5th annual Batiquitos Kayak Cleanup will be this coming weekend. Even if you plan to attend the Carlsbad ArtSplash on one or both of those days you can probably find time to participate in this very worthwhile event (but see note below about registration). The Batiquitos Lagoon is in south Carlsbad, bordering Encinitas, and is a wildlife nature preserve. There are terrific trails to enjoy along the lagoon and great bird watching, but no fishing (except at the mouth jetty by the ocean), swimming or (4 comments)
Carlsbad is blessed with 3 beautiful lagoons, for residents and visitors to enjoy. Significant efforts have been spent over the years to preserve these bodies of water and, in the case of the Batiquitos Lagoon in South Carlsbad, to create a wildlife preserve and walking trails.
The Batiquitos Lagoon, in my view, is the most beautiful. Even the main road off the freeway that runs along the lagoon (La Costa Avenue, with Encinitas to the South) affords one wonderful views of this natural wonder and the hills of Aviara, an affluent residential (4 comments)
