beaches: Coastal or Inland Living in Southern California – Buyer Choices Abound but Lifestyles Differ - 05/12/12 10:02 PM
Coastal or Inland Living in Southern California: Buyer Choices Abound but Lifestyles Differ The weather this week in Carlsbad has settled into the predictable May Gray – very gray during the first part of the day, with some ground fog on occasion, with clearing and sun to follow, and with marine layer rolling in late in the afternoon. It can go from being completely gray to clear skies and sun in just an hour. And the marine layer can move in equally fast late in the day. It reminded me of the choice buyers can

beaches: Stairways to Heaven – Your Steps to the Beaches from Waterfront Homes in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Beyond - 03/20/12 09:00 PM
Stairways to Heaven – Your Steps to the Beaches from Waterfront Homes in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Beyond It might not be everyone’s idea of heaven, but the beach is pretty darn nice and lots of people will pay big bucks to live to it, near it, or in sight of it. These stairways to heaven vary immensely along our coast, especially in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach. There are some places no stairs are needed (Carlsbad State Beach, Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, some homes in Oceanside), but because of our bluffs (the edge of the continent), there

beaches: Walk to the Beach! Uh, No Frickin’ Way - 03/11/12 08:03 PM
Walk to the Beach! Uh, No Frickin’ Way Living along the coast in Carlsbad, I often get requests from buyers seeking primary or vacation homes to enjoy a slice of the Southern California life where they can “walk to the beach.” I get that, as I would enjoy that, too, and have in past homes. It’s a loaded request, since first and foremost it brings with it the issue of price. How MUCH are you willing or able to pay for the privilege of walking to the beach? Many buyers, in the general region but more

beaches: SoCal H20 Rescue Team & K9 Lifeguard Service, San Diego Coast, CA - 03/06/12 05:48 PM
SoCal H20 Rescue Team & K9 Lifeguard Service, San Diego Coast, CA How fortunate we are to have the SoCal H2O Rescue Team & K9 Lifeguard Service of San Diego, a team of humans and canines dedicated to search, rescue and recovery missions – America’s first canine lifeguard service! I saw their vehicle the other day on the road and it reminded me that this needed to be shared. The SoCal H2O Rescue Team aids in search, rescue and recovery missions in San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino and Imperial counties and sometimes out of state. They typically haunt

beaches: What IS That Bird? It’s the California Brown Pelican - 11/26/11 06:39 PM
What IS That Bird? It’s the California Brown Pelican One of my favorite sights when walking along the Carlsbad boardwalk, next to the ocean of course, are the pelicans flying overhead. These unusual looking birds are fascinating to watch whether on the ocean or flying overhead. The California brown pelican, next to the seagull, is probably the most prevalent sea bird we see here along the Southern California coast. These brown pelicans are particularly prevalent at the Agua Hedionda lagoon, just north of the Encina power plant, where they tend to hang out, most likely due to great places

beaches: A Walk on the Carlsbad Boardwalk - 10/29/11 10:32 PM
A walk along the Carlsbad boardwalk at the edge of the continent is a tremendous pleasure particularly with the weather we are enjoying right now. OK, so it's not really a "boardwalk" as one finds along the Jersey shore or Coney Island, but concrete. And it's not lined by shops and restaurants as I recall part of the NJ board walk to be, especially in Ocean City and Atlantic City. But having a place to stroll along the beach to enjoy the views of the ocean, the neighborhoods, and the Coast Road is pretty special. And given the number of people out

beaches: On the Beach in Carlsbad Village, New Year's Eve Day 2010 - 12/31/10 08:22 PM
It was a fitting way to spend some time this afternoon, on the beach in Carlsbad Village on the eve of the New Year. It was chilly for us So Cal beach folks, about 50, and I even had shoes on, but it was balmy I suppose in comparison to many other parts of the country. We certainly are not experiencing the nasty weather so many other people are, for which I am thankful. My heart goes out to all who are dealing with ugly weather and traveling at this time. Lots of people out and about, both vacationers and

beaches: A Visit to Swami's Beach in Encinitas CA | Surfing Nirvana for Some - 12/05/10 11:43 PM
A Visit to Swami's Beach in Encinitas CA - It May be Surfing Nirvana for Some Swami's Beach is one of the more famous surfing beaches in the North San Diego County coastal area. It certainly has a cool name. And being relocated adjacent to the Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Swami Paramahansa Yogananda in 1937, often regarded as the founder of Yoga in the western world, helps to understand the name, a nickname which has stuck for generations. It's pretty amazing to stand at the edge of the continent and take in the scenery, and the surfing. The hike down

beaches: Kitesurfing at the Beach in Cardiff CA | November 28, 2010 - 11/30/10 10:13 AM
Kitesurfing at the Beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA in November A blustery fall day made for terrific kitesurfing at the beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California this past weekend. Indeed, because of the wind and the cold (OK 50 degrees and wind is chilly here in SoCal) there wasn't too much else going on at the beach in the early morning except kitesurfing and a few brave surfers in wetsuits. I personally like both feet on the ground, unless I'm flying, and a bunch of other land-lovers were out to watch the kitesurfers tackle the wind and the waves. It was pretty cool

beaches: Steps to the Beach in Carlsbad and Encinitas CA - 08/12/10 01:56 PM
Steps to the Beach in Carlsbad and Encinitas CA Steps to the beach implies more than you might think. Of course it usually means that you are living close to the ocean edge. MLS listings often note that as a plug for the home in question. How far that is varies depending on the agent's perspective. Guess I tend to think of this as equating to 2-3 minutes walk at most. Not a 10 minute stroll. Distance is in the eyes of the beholder. So if this is important to you when you are going to purchase a home, be

beaches: Hey It's Summer in San Diego - 06/27/10 01:19 PM
Summer in Southern California means a lot of things. It certainly has hit other parts of the country with vengeance - record heat, humidity, rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes. Here along the Carlsbad coast we have yet to see much of a chance in temperature, and June gloom is still prevalent. That will change. The desert is already heating up to the 3 digits. Summer means lots of things, though...my summer photo, for one - recycled every summer for the past 3 years. Taken right after coming off the beach, it comes out at the beginning of summer and goes

beaches: Carlsbad Beaches – Beauty Abounds Along the Carlsbad Coast: Sun, Surf and Sand - 04/23/10 09:02 PM
Carlsbad Beaches - Beauty Abounds Along the Carlsbad Coast: Sun, Surf and Sand I love living close to the beach. Even better, I really enjoy spending time there. Or at least driving along it. And I especially like living in Carlsbad, the Village by the Sea. READ MORE: Carlsbad Village by the Sea The Carlsbad beaches are beautiful, and draw residents and visitors alike for a host of reasons - surfing, taking walks, watching the sun set, al fresco dining (even better when the sun is heading to the horizon), building castles, swimming, kite flying, beach volley ball, napping and

beaches: Winter Beach Sentinels in Carlsbad - 12/27/09 11:32 PM
I was out running errands just before the holiday and stopped to take some winter photos at South Carlsbad State Beach. Folks were out walking, a family was all dressed up in red and white taking holiday photos, and the weather was in the mid 60s in the late morning - not bad for December 24th. The cluster of life guard shacks, some old and some new (in blue), caught my eye. ******************************** Subscribe in a reader If I can provide more information about Carlsbad real estate and surrounding areas, or the housing market in general, or otherwise assist you in

beaches: Blogging Withdrawal, A Vacation, and a Hurricane - 11/09/09 06:14 PM
I just returned from a week in Cancun. Yes, it was vacation, and there was NO blogging withdrawal (OK so I did activate a couple of draft posts that were done before leaving but it took 30 seconds to do that). And there WAS a hurricane - IDA was her name. She flipped from tropical storm to hurricane, to tropical storm and back to hurricane while we were there, AND decided to hide the sun, and provide plenty of rain and wind for 5 of the 7 days of our trip. Despite that there was plenty of great food, it was

beaches: What More Needs to be Said? The Ocean on Video - 11/04/09 10:48 AM
There's not much that I like better than spending time at the beach. While it's only a short distance from my house, it seems I just don't get there often enough. I was out on a long bike ride recently with my camera and stopped along the beach where the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon joins the ocean in Carlsbad California. The jetties there provide some interesting photo ops, but a video seemed even better, since the tide was coming in and the waves were a decent size. So, for those of who who cannot get to the ocean very often, or who

beaches: Carlsbad Ponto Area Development has been Approved and Is Moving Ahead in Carlsbad California - 08/04/09 10:53 PM
After much discussion, evaluation, controversy and time, a portion of Carlsbad's Ponto area development was approved and will now move ahead. The Ponto Beachfront Village Vision Planhas been in the planning stages for years, and there have been numerous hurdles to overcome, including concerns about environmental impact, noise, and increased traffic to the area. The Ponto area lies just east of the Coast Road/Carlsbad Boulevard (historic Route 101), north of La Costa Avenue and south of Poinsettia, an undeveloped area with views (in some places) of the Batiquitos Lagoon and the ocean. The main project, the Ponto Beachfront Village Vision

beaches: Undressing by the Side of the Road - 06/27/09 06:57 PM
That got you didn't it? And now you just have the read on... It's a pretty common sight here in Southern California; folks undressing by the side of the road. Maybe it bothers you, maybe it doesn't. You may not give a hoot...which seems to be the case of many. Are you disappointed there are no pictures? This is really for visitors and folks moving to the area, since Southern Californias already know this - the folks undressing by the side of the road are, of course, the surfers. Lest you think they are all running around the neighborhoods and

beaches: A Buck and Vegetable Oil Will Get You to the Beach - 06/24/09 09:38 PM
It's cheap. It's environmentally friendly. And it runs on bio fuel converted from used vegetable oil. And it can help with our traffic congestion on busy weekends. It's the new Beach Shuttle running through Leucadia, Downtown Encinitas and into Cardff-by-the-Sea along the coast road/Route 101. And it will only cost you $1 (one-way), or $5 for a weekend pass. READ MORE: Encinitas Leucadia Cardiff-by-the-Sea Wherever Shuttle provides the bus - the Coast Cruiser - that covers a several mile route through these coastal towns (and yes, stopping at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas) with 11 stops, including the Coaster Station

beaches: Erosion Control on Carlsbad’s Terramar beach – Controversial? You Bet! - 06/22/09 06:15 PM
There often seems to be controversy when one talks about erosion control. And it is even more of an issue when you are coping with erosion along the Southern California beaches. Erosion concerns raise a host of issues, because of the parties involved - homeowners who want to protect their properties, environmental groups like the Surfrider Foundation concerned about the impact on nature, and state and local agencies such as the Coastal Commission and town building departments with bureaucracy, long approval processes and reports, among others. beaches: The Carlsbad Beach with the Hole in the Fence - 05/30/09 12:01 PM
Carlsbad's coastline is one long beach, uninterrupted from the northern boundary at Oceanside to the seamless merge to Encinitas, and much of the Carlsbad beach is State Beach. But there are a number of different beaches, designated as such by name, parking area and even the jetties where the lagoons join the ocean. Apart from the official names (like South Carlsbad State Beach) there are some interesting unofficial names of beaches that appear on certain maps, or used by locals in the know. My personal favorite is Hole-in-the-Fence Beach, named for, you guessed it, the hole in the fence (I assume).
