Gardening Ingenuity in the City – A Vertical Earth Garden Makes the Most out of Limited Urban Space in Encinitas

Clever bit of sculpture, isn’t it?

I was out touring some lofts in Encinitas recently, and taking photos of the Arts Alive Banner Project when I spied this vertical earth garden outside a new restaurant at Pacific Station in downtown Encinitas – Solace and the Moonlight Lounge.

Vertical Earth Gardens (VEG) presents a clever, space-saving way in the “city” to grow a garden for this restaurant’s everyday use, something that many people could affordably take … (13 comments)

encinitas: Walk to the Beach! Uh, No Frickin’ Way - 03/11/12 08:03 PM
Walk to the Beach! Uh, No Frickin’ Way
Living along the coast in Carlsbad, I often get requests from buyers seeking primary or vacation homes to enjoy a slice of the Southern California life where they can “walk to the beach.”

I get that, as I would enjoy that, too, and have in past homes.

It’s a loaded request, since first and foremost it brings with it the issue of price.

How MUCH are you willing or able to pay for the privilege of walking to the beach?

Many buyers, in the general region but more … (70 comments)

4th Annual Brasil Jazz Festa 2012 in Encinitas was Outstanding
We attended, with a bunch of friends, the 4th Annual Brasil Jazz Festa at the Encinitas Public Library in Encinitas today. Having been to all the prior concerts, I can tell you it’s always great fun and the music is terrific. There aren’t too many venues where you can sit within 7 – 10 feet of the artists and truly experience an intimate setting, plus some wonderful music and singing.

As in the past, the concert featured 3 groups, with a mix of musicians and vocalists, some of whom … (8 comments)

A Winter Walk Through the Meditation Gardens in Encinitas CA
I had a few minutes the other day while out previewing homes for several sets of relocating buyers and running errands and found myself in south Encinitas at the Self Realization Fellowship.
The Meditation Gardens are a wonderful place to take a few minutes to relax and step away from the world while strolling through these beautiful gardens that sit atop the ocean bluff. The peaks of the ocean area spectacular, as is the beauty within, and even in the dead of a Southern California winter, the Meditation Gardens offer incredible … (11 comments)

encinitas: Surfing Madonna Makes Waves in Encinitas CA - 05/02/11 08:01 PM
Surfing Madonna Makes Waves in Encinitas CA The surfing Madonna, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is making waves in Encinitas California. The recently installed mosaic is causing quite a ruckus with the City Council, and the North County Transit District, a government agency that owns the bridge where the artists installed the surfing Madonna without permission.

The mosaic is on Encinitas Boulevard under the railroad bridge just before the boulevard meets the Coast Road, on the north side of the concrete structure. It is beautifully done, as you can see, and many people are in favor of the City making an … (12 comments)

encinitas: Fun at the 3rd Annual Brasil Jazz Festa in Encinitas on January 22, 2010 - 01/23/11 05:28 PM
Fun at the 3rd Annual Brasil Jazz Festa in Encinitas on January 22, 2010  We had a great time at the 3rd Annual Brasil Jazz Festa that took place yesterday at the Encinitas Public Library, our 3rd year in a row. And it keeps getting better.
Interestingly, the Brasil (yes, that is the correct spelling for this event) Jazz Festa has not gotten very large, with perhaps 100 people or so attending. It's a very intimate place to have the vent with the musicians just a few feet away, and with ocean views out the window on a spectacular spring-like day, … (4 comments)

A Visit to Swami's Beach in Encinitas CA - It May be Surfing Nirvana for Some
Swami's Beach is one of the more famous surfing beaches in the North San Diego County coastal area. It certainly has a cool name.
And being relocated adjacent to the Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Swami Paramahansa Yogananda in 1937, often regarded as the founder of Yoga in the western world, helps to understand the name, a nickname which has stuck for generations.
It's pretty amazing to stand at the edge of the continent and take in the scenery, and the surfing. The hike down … (11 comments)
