Apple Days in Julian CA – An Annual Festival and Visit October 2011
We took our annual trip to Julian today – we actually go more than that but always make a journey at apple season. Having lived in New England for many years, picking apples became a huge tradition, and we have continued here in Southern California.

Today we picked Bartlett pears at O’Dell’s organic orchard in Julian, but by-passed the Apple Days Festival at Menghini Winery – what a mob scene THAT was. Laziness set in so we bought a bag of apples on the trip out … (8 comments)

A Visit to Julian CA in Apple Season
For those of us living in Southern California along the course, Julian and other inland mountain communities are a world apart. Perhaps that part of the appeal.
We have beaches, sand and palm trees - they have pine trees, mountains and more leaves that turn colors.
Part of the draw is the history - Julian was a gold mining town in the late 1800s and there are still mines to explore. And you will see all sorts of reminders of that history in the buildings, signage, and the names of places to … (8 comments)

A Visit to the Julian Pie Factory in Julian CA

On a recent day trip to Julian California, a former Gold Rush town about 50 miles inland, we stopped in to buy a pie at the famed Julian Pie Factory after enjoying lunch at our fave place, the Julian Grille.

Julian has been a popular apple destination for years, with their well-known Julian Apple Days Festival in the fall, and the Julian Pie Factory is a must-stop if you like apple pie, although they offer many others as well. The apple peach crumb … (11 comments)

julian: A Visit to the Oasis Camel Dairy (Almost) | Ramona, California - 07/05/10 11:02 PM
A Visit to the Oasis Camel Dairy (Almost) We left the coast today to try and find some sun, which has been sadly missing, except for a peek now and then, for a number of days. Heading east was the way to go since the marine layer would be gone.
A favorite place to visit, about 50 miles away, is Julian, known now for its apples but with a history of being a gold rush town.
It's easy to get to, you simply take the 78 freeway which becomes a smaller road in Escondido, then follow that through the mountains to … (13 comments)

julian: A Day Trip to Julian California - Apple Country in the Mountains - 10/21/09 12:12 AM
We took part of the day on Friday (on one of the most beautiful afternoons we have seen in a while, with temps in the low 90s due to the Santa Ana winds) to visit Julian California, about 50+ miles from Carlsbad in the mountains just outside the Cleveland National Forest.
Julian is an old gold rush mining town (there are still mines you can visit) and it retains much of the charm, the old homes and buildings, and the atmosphere of those times (there's even a couple of horse drawn buggies to enjoy).
At the same time, however, it has also … (28 comments)

julian: Julian Restaurants - The Julian Grille in Julian California - 10/17/09 10:37 AM
Dining out is a favorite activity of mine. And of the Julian restaurants The Julian Grille in Julian CA is the best, in my opinion.
We take an annual trip (and sometimes more) to Julian CA to enjoy the town, the quaint shops, and of course the apples and apple pie for which Julian is famous.
We always take time to have lunch at The Julian Grille in the heart of town on Main Street. Taking a trip to Julian is a fun thing to do for a day or overnight and a beautilful drive through the mountains from Carlsbad.

julian: A Fall Afternoon in Southern California - A Jaunt to Julian, California - 10/12/08 11:20 PM
If you are up for learning more about the Southern California area and things to do on a beautiful fall day...read on. If not, well you know where the delete key is by now.
Fall is here in Carlsbad, and despite what those of you in colder climes think, we DO have a change of seasons. It is NOT always sunny and 80 degrees in San Diego. Indeed, we are having dinner in front of the first fire of the season in the living room (yes, it's gas).

julian: It's About Pie - Julian Pie - 03/18/08 11:27 PM
I like writing about pie. But I sure prefer eating it. And I will, in just a bit.
This post is about pie, Julian Pie, that is. Why?
Well, because I have one sitting on the counter, and it is possibly the best pie around, unless you make it yourself. Perhaps still better. Certainly much easier. You make your selection, plunk down some cash, and home you go with a box full of pie. Don’t forget the vanilla ice cream. What a deal.
The Julian Pie Company is a San Diego favorite and has been for over 20 years. Founded in the … (16 comments)
