la jolla: Hey! Who Put That Pig Farm There? - 04/06/12 07:54 PM
Hey! Who Put That Pig Farm There? It’s all about location…so they say. But sometimes the location comes with, well, what some folks feel are annoyances that shouldn't be there. We lived in Bolton MA a number of years ago, a fairly affluent and somewhat rural community along the 495 corridor about 30 miles west of Boston. Definitely a “bedroom community” as the term goes. [photo courtesy of wattpublishing on Flickr]. Some of the more rural areas were being developed with expensive, custom-built homes on large lots as the town was growing during the DotCom craze

la jolla: Things That Fly | Visiting the Torrey Pines GliderPort in La Jolla CA - 08/26/10 08:55 PM
See the Things That Fly by Visiting the Torrey Pines GliderPort in La Jolla CA The Southern California coastline is spectacular, and a wonderful place to truly see it is at the Torrey Pines Glider Port. I'm not suggesting you HAVE to go hang-gliding, but do so by all means if you wish. However, the views up and down the coast are truly awesome, and getting to watch the things that fly in the area is a treat, especially if you prefer your feet on terra firma (and flying things are NOT just hang gliders). The vistas south along the

la jolla: Blooming Trees in La Jolla California - 04/04/10 05:34 PM
I had to meet up with a client yesterday in La Jolla to sign a counter offer. I decided to take the scenic route home along La Jolla Shores and ujp the hill past the Scripps Oceanography Institute. The views are spectacular. I thought these trees were particularly interesting given their unique shape and the brilliant red flowers. I have no clue what they are - any ideas? FOLLOW-UP NOTE: I've done some research and as best I can tell these are RED CORAL TREES READ MORE: La Jolla Real Estate - The Jewel on the San Diego Coastline

la jolla: La Jolla Real Estate - La Jolla Real Estate Market Report for February 2010 - 03/04/10 11:17 AM
The La Jolla real estate market is one of the most expensive in San Diego County. A visit to La Jolla on-line, or better yet in real life, will quickly give you a good sense of why this is so. La Jolla, "The Jewel," is an extraordinarily beautiful coastal community with many homes offering fabulous views of the ocean from the hills, and a trendy, very up-scale village offering the finest in shopping and dining. La Jolla has often been compared to the French and Italian Rivieras with wonderful ocean and coastline vistas from the hills, amazing homes, beautiful architecture,

la jolla: San Diego's Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - An Icon in the La Jolla Area - 01/31/10 11:47 PM
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is an icon in the San Diego area. Located along the 5 freeway, it is impossible for the Church of Latter Day Saints to not grab your attention as you drive north or south in La Jolla, but it can also be seen from many of the area hilltops, including Mt. Soledad in La Jolla. While I have seen it countless times from a distance, I have often wanted to stop by and take photos, but never took the time to do so. Today was the day, as I was showing

la jolla: Aahhh, The Dog Days of Summer in Southern California - 07/10/09 10:20 PM
Ah, the dog days of summer. Ever wonder where that phrase came from? Terrific weather is here in SoCal in full force. We have left the June Gloom marine layer behind (except for some early morning gray near the coast which is to be expected), the vacationers have arrived, and summer events (concerts, outdoor movies, art fairs) are abundant. la jolla: Walkable Neighborhood Series – Real Estate in Upscale, Affluent La Jolla Village - 02/17/09 12:00 AM
La Jolla, often referred to as "the jewel," is a beautiful community along the coast just north of San Diego. Many homes are clustered along the coastline, or on the hills (which remind many of some of the Mediterranean towns in France and Italy overlooking the sea) with spectacular ocean and coastal views. Because of its location along the Pacific, the views and the types of homes built there, La Jolla remains one of San Diego's most expensive, and exclusive, communities with a median home price in the last 6 months of $1.5 million (the average price was a little over

la jolla: What's Up with all the Eucalyptus Trees in Carlsbad? - 11/19/08 10:01 AM
The eucalyptus tree is a common sight in northeast Carlsbad in an area known as Hosp Grove. Hundreds and hundreds as a matter of fact. You will see a smattering of them in some other areas, and large quantities in communities like Rancho Santa Fe, Scripps Ranch, Olivenhain (Encinitas) and La Jolla (especially near UCSD). I have one in my yard and there are a bunch along my street here in La Costa. Like the palm tree, they remind many visitors of the Southern California, and in some ways seem as much a part of the vegetation as the palm trees,

la jolla: Carlsbad Real Estate and Other Area YTD Sales for 2008 vs. 2007 - 11/09/08 09:57 PM
There are lots of numbers floating around in the various reports that we see or hear about in the media, and a popular question folks often have is "how is the market doing?" A complex question for sure, and so much of the answer depends on what aspect of the market you are talking about. Prices? Number of sales? What type of properties? Location? Time frame? Here are some data from the MLS for the Carlsbad real estate market and other communities I service (these data are believed reliable but are not guaranteed), looking at YTD data from 2008 versus

la jolla: La Jolla, California - VIDEO Tour of This Jewel by the Sea - 10/31/08 07:48 PM
La Jolla, California, a few miles north of San Diego, is an incredibly beautiful community nestled along the blue Pacific, with terrific views of the ocean and the Southern California coastline. The town has been compared to the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy, with homes cascading down the hillsides to meet the sea, but with its own Southern California caché. la jolla: So you Think YOU Have Challenges? A Day of Inspiration in La Jolla, California - 10/26/08 08:37 PM
Imagine missing one leg, or both. Or an arm, or both. How about both arms and legs? What if you were confined to a wheelchair, partially paralyzed? Can you imagine what life might be like? There are lots of folks who DO know what it's like. And they don't let it stop them from enjoying life and being active. Some are incredible athletes. I saw some of them today in La Jolla. La Jolla was the site of the Tour de Cove and the San Diego Triathlon Challenge to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). And many of the folks I

la jolla: Tour de Cove in La Jolla This Sunday October 26th - 10/23/08 04:19 PM
This Sunday in La Jolla California is a very special day. It's the Tour de Cove. The Tour de Cove is a significant fund raising event for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). Monies raised benefits CAH who helps folks with physical challenge pursue active ifestyle through physical fitness and atheltics. The funds are used to purchase prosthetics (which can cost $15,000), wheelchairs and handcycles (about $2000) for these athletes, many of whom compete locally, nationally and internationally in a host of events. la jolla: What Does $1 Million Buy in Carlsbad and Nearby? How About $5 Million? - 10/20/08 07:12 PM
A million bucks just isn't what it used to be. It's still a heckuva lot of money, especially in terms of annual salary, but with regard to housing, at least here in California, a million dollars just doesn't buy what it used to. In some of the more expensive communities like La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and Coronado you can hardly buy any sort of detached home for under a million. But with housing prices dropping in the last couple of years, one can certainly get more for a million dollars in my area than in

la jolla: Best Places to Sunset Watch in Carlsbad California and Nearby (LOCALISM FEATURED) - 10/18/08 03:45 PM
Watching the California sun set over the ocean is a breathtaking experience...at least when the sky has not covered up the sun. While a completely clear sky and a setting sun is beautiful, seeing the sun sink below the horizon on a day with some clouds can result in incredible colors. I have yet to actually see the green flash that can occur on a clear day but have it from reputable folks that it DOES occur and it IS amazing to see. So where do you go to watch the sun set in Carlsbad, or nearby? Here are my favorites.
