Kudos are due the Carlsbad Cardiovascular Disease Foundation for the 5 K Run/Walk for Life at Seaport Village in Downtown San Diego today which was a Huge Success.

There were lots of runners and walkers, plenty of funds raised for a wonderful cause, dozens of volunteers who believe in helping, many health fair vendors, and a very special thank you to Malinda Engerer, Executive Director, Nancy Kelly, Director of Programs and Major Gifts, and Sandra Zeitzew, Non-profit Consultant, for organizing … (12 comments)

How fortunate we are to have the SoCal H2O Rescue Team & K9 Lifeguard Service of San Diego, a team of humans and canines dedicated to search, rescue and recovery missions – America’s first canine lifeguard service!

I saw their vehicle the other day on the road and it reminded me that this needed to be shared.

san diego: Only in California on the Freeway? Perhaps Not - 01/05/12 10:41 PM
Only in California on the Freeway? Perhaps Not
I saw this vehicle the other day on the 805 freeway and felt it warranted a photo (yes someone else took the photo).

Look carefully – what do you think?

First, my impression is that this is pretty savvy marketing. Tons of people will see a car with advertising, especially on the road, so it could be a great way to get your message out.

Of course you have to be a careful and courteous driver or you might find it working against you. Cutting people off, speeding, … (18 comments)

san diego: A Visit to the Oasis Camel Dairy (Almost) | Ramona, California - 07/05/10 11:02 PM
A Visit to the Oasis Camel Dairy (Almost) We left the coast today to try and find some sun, which has been sadly missing, except for a peek now and then, for a number of days. Heading east was the way to go since the marine layer would be gone.
A favorite place to visit, about 50 miles away, is Julian, known now for its apples but with a history of being a gold rush town.
It's easy to get to, you simply take the 78 freeway which becomes a smaller road in Escondido, then follow that through the mountains to … (13 comments)

san diego: Hey It's Summer in San Diego - 06/27/10 01:19 PM
Summer in Southern California means a lot of things.

It certainly has hit other parts of the country with vengeance - record heat, humidity, rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Here along the Carlsbad coast we have yet to see much of a chance in temperature, and June gloom is still prevalent. That will change. The desert is already heating up to the 3 digits.
Summer means lots of things, though...my summer photo, for one - recycled every summer for the past 3 years. Taken right after coming off the beach, it comes out at the beginning of summer and goes … (6 comments)

san diego: Little Italy Restaurants | Trattoria Fantastica - Italian Restaurant in Little Italy in San Diego CA - 06/20/10 01:42 PM

A Visit to a Little Italy Restaurant - Trattoria Fantastica
A visit to Little Italy in San Diego is a real treat, whether you choose to simply stroll and take in the atmosphere, or better yet dine, shop and explore all that Little Italy has to offer.
A recent visit was both a visual and a gustatory delight.
As a self-confessed foodie, dining out is always a pleasure. And finding a Little Italy Restaurant like Trattoria Fantastica where we could dine street-side to take in the views was a most pleasant surprise.

Trattoria Fantastica, one of 7 … (6 comments)

Earthquakes in Southern California - A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On
There were a bunch of earthquakes in Southern California last night. I know because my laptop was shaking a bit on my desk for about 3 seconds. That was it.
I just felt the one - my wife, sitting 10 feet away in the family room didn't feel a thing - but there were numerous small quakes within a short period of time. My son-in-law felt it up in LA, but my daughter didn't - they called to see if we had noticed, about 9:30 pm.
One of the neat … (8 comments)

san diego: San Diego County Fair 2010 | Del Mar California - 06/10/10 08:03 PM
San Diego County Fair 2010 is coming to Del Mar California
It's an exciting week in San Diego, for tomorrow, Friday June 11th , is the start of the San Diego County Fair.
The theme for the San Diego County Fair this year is "Taste the Fun" so of course one can expect a huge array of food, expectable and not. And if you don't stuff your face, at least a little, how will you have the energy to explore all that the San Diego County Fair has to offer?
This year the 22-day fair runs through July 5, 2010 (the … (11 comments)

san diego: OUCH - 06/04/10 10:05 PM
This is not likely a tree you are gonna want to climb, unless you are particularly daring or into pain.

I've seen them around here and there but finally got around to a bit of photography. Not very welcoming from a Feng Shui standpoint either, so you need to keep them away from your front entrance.
I'm not positive, but these appear to be pochote trees. But there are other trees, I've learned, in other parts of the country that have thorns - Honey locust, certain lemon varieties, and more. Regardless, they are not trees you want to tangle with … (18 comments)

June Gloom - It Ain't ALWAYS Sunny in Southern California

The San Diego area of Southern California, including Carlsbad, is known for having fabulous weather. We call it living in paradise. And we do have sun much of the time.
If you have ever seen Steve Martin in LA Story, you'll likely recall his role as the wacky weather dude Harris Telemacher where the weather report, day after day, was SUNNY.
On a side note there were lots of other humorous pokes at life in LA (and California in general) in LA Story - watch the trailer.
Folks who … (6 comments)

san diego: Funny Friday - 03/12/10 10:32 PM

I had the opportunity to spend some time at Balboa Park yesterday with some out-of-town family. This is part of a terrific sculpture outside one of the many museums in the park.

san diego: Balboa Park in San Diego California - A Visual Tour - 03/11/10 10:49 PM
Sometimes you get more out of the visuals than a lot of commentary.
For a place like Balboa Park in San Diego, California, with a reputation as one of the nation's largest cultural urban parks, this is so true. With 15 museums, a variety of gardens, wonderful theatres, stunning architecture, and lots of green space Balboa Park near the downtown area is a real treat, even if you only have time to walk around.
William Johnson also wrote a wonderful post about the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park - do stop by and check it out.
Enjoy the tour. Perhaps … (4 comments)
