Serious Real Estate Challenges for Serious Relocation Buyers (Part 1 of a 3-Part Series)
Serious relocation buyers to Carlsbad, or anywhere for that matter, must take a serious approach to their home searching and the overall process. After all, relocation is a tough job with a host of tasks to navigate successfully.

And if you are moving to an unfamiliar area, coupled with other moving challenges (e.g., jobs, family, pets, cars), on top of daily living and home searching remotely, at times it can seem insurmountable.

Here are some tips for your relocation and issues to keep … (11 comments)

southern california: Orange Peel on the Walls? Really? - 04/26/12 08:39 PM
Orange Peel on the Walls? Really?
It’s a strange thing, particularly for someone coming from New England, but orange peel on the walls is pretty odd.

I’ve gotten used to it, but I still find it rather “unappeeling” (pun intended), but it sure is common in these parts. Indeed, it seems more common than smooth-surface walls which I am used to from back East. I don’t know why it’s so popular or if there are particular reasons for its use, except that it might be easier to deal with than seams and such from the drywall and applying a … (53 comments)

southern california: The College of the Desert SWAP MEET in Palm Desert, CA – A New Look - 03/30/12 07:54 AM
The College of the Desert SWAP MEET in Palm Desert, CA – A New Look
The College of the Desert Swap Meet is an amazing array of vendors, selling their wares on Saturdays and Sundays year-round on the campus near the heart of downtown Palm Desert.

If you ever get a chance to visit this famous Swap Meet in Palm Desert, it is well worth it.

Picture a mobile outdoor mall of several hundred tents, with palm trees and mountains in the near distance, and the opportunity to spend hours browsing and shopping and probably not be … (4 comments)

southern california: Outdoor Living in Carlsbad California – At Home (Part 1 of 2) - 03/25/12 07:38 PM
Outdoor Living in Carlsbad California – At Home (Part 1 of 2)

Buyers looking for a home in the Carlsbad CA area often have a common request…to have outdoor space for enjoying the Southern California lifestyle.

That outdoor space request may mean a simple deck or patio, for those living in a condo. But it might mean a full-blown outdoor kitchen and elaborate entertainment area.

Amenities might include a pool (with slide or waterfall), fountain, spa or spool, plenty of hardscape, perhaps on varying levels, firepit(s) or wood burning fireplace, bar area, plentiful seating areas, built-in heat … (7 comments)

The Affordable Art Fair in Los Angeles, January 18 - 22, 2012
The Affordable Art Fair (I’ve never heard of an unaffordable one although some of the auctions you hear about certainly fit the bill) will be held in Los Angeles CA beginning TODAY, Wednesday January 18th through Sunday the 22nd.

I mention the Affordable Art Fair Los Angeles for all Southern California art lovers, and because I plan to be there Saturday.

In our past lives as art gallery owners back in the Boston area we had a good artist friend, Peter Arvidson, whose works … (3 comments)

southern california: Escargots - 04/03/11 10:24 PM
Escargots For the uninitiated, "escargots" is French for snails.
Quite a delicacy, with butter and garlic.
We have them in our California garden. The photo shows one (of many today) climbing the outside of a small planter).
I DON'T eat them, but the lizards like them as do the crows. And I will admit to having escargots many years ago in a couple of classy French restaurants. They were quite good. And I recall seeing them on the menu of a number of Michelin-starred places we saw in our trips to Paris.
Here's a recipe.
But I'm not sure they are the … (15 comments)

southern california: ALERT! Tsunami Warning and Advisory for the West Coast - 03/11/11 10:05 AM
An 8.9 earthquake last night near the island of Honshu, Japan has reportedly produced a tsunami that may impact the entire west coast from California to Alaska.
A tsunami warning has been issued for Point Conception in California north to the Oregon-Washington border, and then again in Alaska.
Hawaii is under warning with evacuation taking place from what I've heard.
A tsunami advisory is in force from the Mexico border north along the California coast (my area) to Point Concpetion.
Here's the list of possible arrival times of the tsunami.

There is a map to show possible affected areas but … (14 comments)

southern california: Oh, The Weather Outside is Frightful... - 12/20/10 10:57 PM
Oh, The Weather Outside is Frightful...  It's that time of year, and "oh the weather outside is frightful..."
Certainly you recognize the words to that famous holiday song, "Let it Snow."
No doubt some of you are singing that right now in your winter wonderland.
We're not having snow here in Southern California (they are in the mountains), but the weather is still pretty frightful with heavy rains and winds that arrived late last week and have continued.
Certainly it doesn't compare to some of the ugliness people are having in the northwest and other parts of the country, but for … (17 comments)

southern california: Things to Know About the Highways, Uh, Freeways in Southern California - 11/28/10 07:28 PM
Some Things to Know About the Southern California Freeways
Perhaps this seems an odd topic, but freeways are a big deal here in Southern California, being as focused on cars as we are. And it's different from other parts of the country. Folks who haven't been here, or are moving here, need to know a few things.

It's probably less of a big change if you come from another major metropolitan area, but still (traffic pic courtesy of Tammra on Flickr). So know these things:
#1  There are a lot of them.
#2  They are called freeways, not highways … (15 comments)

A Visit to the College of the Desert Swap Meet in Palm Desert CA
The College of the Desert Swap meet in Palm Desert CA is an amazing shopping extravaganza.
Are you thinking flea market? Hardly.
In fact the term swap meet does not do justice to this incredible open-air shopping experience that takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 7 am until 2 pm at the College of the Desert in Palm Desert California. There are 340 spaces for vendors during the tourist season (October through May) and about 100 in the hotter summer months from May until September.

southern california: Bistro Laurent | Happy Halloween, and a Vote for a Great Breakfast Place in Culver City (Los Angeles) CA - 10/31/10 11:45 PM
Bistro Laurent in Culver City, CA (Los Angeles)
This guy greeted us at the door at Bistro Laurent where we went to brunch this morning. It was a very suitable beginning to this Halloween Day.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN, by the way. Even though it's about over.
Bistro Laurent is the second restaurant by the same owner, Cafe Laurent being a long-time favorite on Overland in LA. Seems we hardly ever leave LA without having brunch there. Their pastries are amazing, and brunch is always good, no matter what we order.
Bistro Laurent, at 3936 Sepulveda, has only been open a couple … (16 comments)

southern california: A Visit to Julian CA in Apple Season - 10/24/10 11:04 PM
A Visit to Julian CA in Apple Season
For those of us living in Southern California along the course, Julian and other inland mountain communities are a world apart. Perhaps that part of the appeal.
We have beaches, sand and palm trees - they have pine trees, mountains and more leaves that turn colors.
Part of the draw is the history - Julian was a gold mining town in the late 1800s and there are still mines to explore. And you will see all sorts of reminders of that history in the buildings, signage, and the names of places to … (8 comments)

southern california: There's a Message There Somewhere - 10/23/10 09:17 PM

I saw this van parked along the coast road in Cardiff-by-the Sea (a.k.a. Cardiff) across from the beach. No doubt it belongs to a surfer, judging from the wetsuit hanging outside.
I was stopped at the light and fortunately had a few seconds to snap a photo. You see all sorts of interesting vehicles here in California, especially near the beach. This one was a real prize, I think.
I would have liked to have met the owner!! It's a slice of surfing life here in SoCal.

southern california: My 10 Favorite Drives in California - 10/17/10 11:47 PM
My 10 Favorite Drives in California I often enjoy taking road trips, whether for part of a day or over a several day period. It may be en route to a destination, other times it's just a drive. Sometimes a drive is discovered while on business.
California is loaded with amazing views, from the mountains to the desert, the city to the beaches, and a drive on the back roads is the best way to discover them, although the freeway can offer some amazing views sometimes.
I have some favorite drives here in California, many in the Southern ara where I … (15 comments)

southern california: Southern California Vegetation | A Study in Contrasts - 08/29/10 11:56 PM

Vegetation in Southern California covers an amazing array of contrasts in color, size, greenery and flowers. It can be very tropical, or from the desert. We see plants more commonly seen in colder climates, and a few things aren't found too many other places, like the Torrey Pine.
One of my seller clients has a goregous garden, which is, itself, a study of contrasts. I love the simplicity of the tiny groundcover which is, literally, 5 feet from a huge sago palm (not a real palm).
Beauty to behold.

[Note - I have tried repeatedly to upload the contrasting photo … (5 comments)

southern california: Steps to the Beach in Carlsbad and Encinitas CA - 08/12/10 01:56 PM
Steps to the Beach in Carlsbad and Encinitas CA
Steps to the beach implies more than you might think.
Of course it usually means that you are living close to the ocean edge. MLS listings often note that as a plug for the home in question. How far that is varies depending on the agent's perspective. Guess I tend to think of this as equating to 2-3 minutes walk at most. Not a 10 minute stroll.
Distance is in the eyes of the beholder. So if this is important to you when you are going to purchase a home, be … (15 comments)

Solvang Restaurants - Root 246 by Bradley Ogden in Santa Barbara's Wine Country
An inventive menu of farm to table ingredients, an extensive wine list, a celebrity chef, and a creative, upscale ambiance made for a fabulous dining experience at one of Solvang's best restaurants, Root 246 (formerly Meadows).
It's always a pleasure to stumble upon a wonderful restaurant, even more so when you don't expect it. Root 246 in Solvang was exactly that in the heart of Santa Barbara's wine country.

Our original intent was to enjoy a glass of wine at a bar after our … (6 comments)

Zzyzx Road and Other Sights | Travel to Las Vegas from the California Coast
I drove from Carlsbad to Las Vegas this afternoon to attend the CRS Sellabration Convention at the Paris Hotel. It’s a 5 hour drive on the freeway and after a while it tends to get boring, especially since there are long stretches where there is nothing to really look at except the desert and barren mountain landscape.

I entertain myself with music and a few phone calls, but also look for intriguing sights along the way. It’s always interesting what you see when you … (9 comments)

southern california: Can You Guess What This Is??!! - 06/19/10 11:16 PM
Can You Guess What This Is?
The beauty of California's agriculture never ceases to amaze. If you ever drive through some of the hotbeds of agriculture you cannot help but be impressed by the amount of land that is allocated to produce and fruits, in areas like Oxnard, and the Central Valley (Kern, Tulare, Fresno and Merced Counties).

California is the nation's top producing agricultural state, and some time spent in any of the major agricultural areas will convince you of why this is so. The diversity and amount of products we see coming from California is truly amazing.
