Hawaiian Linguist and Scholar Mary Kawena Pukui is considered a cultural treasure here in Hawaii and her tireless dedication to preserving, recording, and reviving the Hawaiian language has left an indelible mark on contemporary Hawaiian culture and history. Ms. Pukui is best known for having published the first Native Hawaiian language dictionary as well as the renowned "Olelo No Eau" a collection of ancient Hawaiian proverbs and sayings. It is through her work and dedication, in a time when Hawaiian culture was threatened with extinction, that helped push the native Hawaiians or Kanaka Maoli into a cultural renaissance.  Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24, 2009;
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  In celebration of Maoli Arts Month (MAMo), Bishop Museum will host the Native Hawaiian Arts Market & Keiki Day; co-sponsored with the PAI Foundation. The 4th Annual Native Hawaiian Arts Market and Keiki Arts Festival will feature over 40 Native Hawaiian visual artists, from fine arts to contemporary craftwork.  Highly collectible and of extraordinary quality, featured works will include feather work, silk scarves, turned bowls, carved images, decorated gourds, weaponry, and weaving.

Questions for Kimo: Our family is re-locating to Hawaii and we are wondering where's the best place to learn about Hawaiian culture?
In my opinion the best and most family orientated place to learn about Hawaiian culture is the Bishop Museum, located at 1525 Bernice Street, Honolulu, Hawai'i 96817  Phone: 808.847.3511. The Museum is located in Palama just off the Like Like and H1 Highways. It's a little bit out of the way for tourists and new comers but it's well worth the trip for visitors and locals alike.
