The Guemes Island Ferry Committee convenes it's annual meeting this Sunday, January 18th at 2:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Guemes Islander Glen Veal says he will seek re-election to another five year term. Other agenda will include updates on recent events -- such as more upcoming changes in the Guemes Island ferry schedule. The schedule was last changed on January 1st of this year. Skagit County commissioners voted 2-1 to continue to the weekday evening service on the Guemes Island ferry.
However, there will be some modifications to the schedule. During the trial period for the weekday evening runs that began in July 2006, the last ferry time was 10 p.m. It will be 8:30 beginning on Jan. 1, 2009.
The number of runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday were reduced. Midnight runs on weekend nights were eliminated.

No decision at Mondays's hearing on the Guemes Island Ferry Schedule ......
Guemes Island is a quaint little island with a tight knight community. But the proposed elimination of the Guemes Island Ferry runs after 6 PM weekdays has the island divided. Newer residents purchased their Guemes Island homes hoping the current schedule would be made permanent.
Long time residents want the island to stay quiet with only a few hundred full time residents. They also sight the burden on Skagit County tax payers.

On July 17th, 2008 Skagit County Commissioners adopted an interim schedule for Guemes Island Ferry This action was necessary because the extended schedule for the Guemes Island Ferry was only a two year test which ended June 30, 2008. The currecty hours will stay in effect through December 31, 2008. The current schedule extended service to 10: 00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Skagit County to experiment with bio-diesel for the Guemes Island Ferry Skagit County received a $12,000 grant to test bio-diesel for the Guemes Island Ferry. Currently they are using a 5% mix for one of the engines, and hope that by November they will be up to 25% bio-diesel to 80% diesel. One more reason that Skagit County is a great place to live!
