Every 10 Years You Should You Replace A smoke Detector - 11/10/10 01:53 PM
The U.S. Fire Administration says you should also be changing your smoke detector unit as a whole every 10 years. They are reminding the public that smoke alarms have a life span of 10 years. So if you installed your detector before May 2000, it's time to change it. One of the things detector manufacturers found is that after a 10 year period there is a failure in notifying a person of a fire. Any failure like that is unacceptable. You've got to be able to detect a fire early. More than 3,000 people die in house fires every year and (1 comments)
Do Fire Extinguishers Expire? - 11/10/10 01:39 PM
Fire extinguishers don't normally expire, but some do need recharging occasionally. However, some professionals routinely start replacing or recharging extinguishers after about 7 years of service as a preventive measure. This is why OSHA's Fire Prevention standard requires all fire extinguishers to be "inspected" annually by someone trained to do that inspection. Most companies have their fire extinguishers inspected yearly by a safety company, which places month and year inspection tags on each extinguisher. The average cost for this service is only a few dollars per extinguisher. In addition, OSHA also expects the business to regularly (like every month) check each (1 comments)
It is that time again to clean your chimney. It is recommend at least once a year to prevent chimney fires from occurring. While it's always a good idea to have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home, having a clean chimney can prevent them from ever going off. Before you use your fireplace for the first time in the fall, you should have the chimney inspected for cracks. You'll want to make sure that there are no animals such as birds or squirrels nesting inside. All fireplaces require an adequate source of flowing air to feed the fire and (1 comments)

As we fall back this weekend with the time change, I am reminding everyone to change batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. More Reminders 1 Dust or vacuum smoke detectors in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Keep them free of debris and test them at least once a month by using the alarm's "test button" to make sure they are functioning properly. 2 Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of the home, including the basement, and in or near each sleeping area. Working with your real estate professional you need to do the following: * Before making an offer get full disclosure on the condition of the property, any liens or back-taxes, easements, etc. Also get a copy of any neighborhood association rules and by-laws, if you have a home business and the association has restrictions on these kinds of activities then you need to know before you offer to buy.
