georgia: Buying HUD Homes in Georgia - Information for Home Buyers - 10/30/10 02:10 AM

HUD (Housing and Urban Development) homes are a part of the The Federal Housing Administration(FHA).  FHA insured loans provide federal mortgage insurance to homes owners.
When homes purchased through the FHA programs are foreclosed on, the lender can file a claim for the mortgage payoff and the ownership of the home will go to HUD.
Homes purchased from HUD require only $100 down as opposed to buying through the FHA program which requires 3.5% down.
HUD offices do not work with potential home buyers - you must use a Real Estate Agent.

georgia: Dahlonega Georgia - Lumpkin Coalition - Hemlock Festival 2010 - 10/21/10 05:22 AM
The beautiful Appalachian mountains are filled with trees and wildlife that make up it's rich forest.
As with many facets of our environment, the Appalachian trees are in danger due to pollution and environmental changes.  The woolly adelgid is an insect that is a direct threat to our Hemlock Trees in the North Georgia region.
The air pollution and climate over time weakens these protective trees and leaves then vulnerable to disease and bugs.
Scientist have concluded that beetles are proving to be most helpful in the fight against damaging insects to our Hemlocks.  The University of Georgia, Young Harris College and North Georgia … (0 comments)

georgia: Simple Ways to Reduce Energy this Winter - 10/17/10 02:07 AM

Dahlonega and Dawsonville Georgia's hot, humid summer came to an abrupt end recently and left many of us scrambling for sweaters.  Cooler weather has me evaluating my home and simple ways to reduce energy and cost this upcoming winter.

The best place to start when trying to maintain heat in your home is the insulation.  Insure that your homes attic, floors, crawl space and wood frame wall cavity is insulated with the appropriated R-Value insulation.  There are many ratings out there and unless you purchase a home from an Energy Star Program builder, chances are your home has lower level R rated insulation.

Cordell Shipping Container House has developed a new way to recycle glass called Filterpave.  This unique method of paving consists of granite and 100% post consumer waste glass material.  Glass in assorted colors like green and auburn (thanks to beer companies such as Amstel and Heineken) are blended together to make beautiful colors that not only create a porous surface, but a driveway that is sure to dazzle.
This method of porous driveways reduces runoff water and allows the … (0 comments)

georgia: Painting or Updating Appliances? Think Green! - 10/04/10 06:21 AM
Renovating and updating your home using Green products does not have to mean adding more money to your budget.
Selecting more ‘Earth Friendly' products can reduce energy use and air quality in your home.  Another common misconception is that recycled products may look different than your higher end products, this is also not true with most new products on the market now.  ‘Going Green' has become increasing easier with today's new choices.

All major paint manufacturers now offer paints that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  The prices remain about the same (less than $2 per gallon), but studies … (1 comments)

georgia: Bed Bugs: The Green Way to Take Care of Your Home - 09/18/10 11:49 AM
Bed Bugs have been around for thousands of years and were eradicated from most countries using the toxic chemical DDT after World War II.  DDT was later banned because it was so dangerous and toxic to the environment. These reddish-brown, flat bugs have made a comeback in North Georgia since 1995 and cases appear to be on the rise.
The best place to start when ridding your home of bed bugs is with vacuuming everything, including your furniture and curtains. Empty the vacuum bag and make sure that you remove the bag from your home.  Clean your living space and wash/dry-clean all bedding … (8 comments)
