WASHINGTON -- Mortgage application volume rose 8.3% during the week ending Jan. 18, according to the trade group Mortgage Bankers Association's weekly application survey.Mortgage volume rose as interest rates continued to fall. The average interest rate for traditional, 30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell to 5.49% from 5.62%. The average rate for 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, which are often used to refinance a home, fell to 4.96% from 5.07%. The survey provides a snapshot of mortgage lending activity among mortgage bankers, commercial banks and thrifts. It covers about 50% of all residential retail mortgage originations each week.

Freddie Mac today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) in which the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 5.48 percent with an average 0.4 point for the week ending January 24, 2008, down from last week when it averaged 5.69 percent as well. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.25 percent. The 30-year FRM has not been lower since the week ending March 25, 2004 when it averaged 5.40 percent.
