I have been a Lunch Buddy for years.  The Lunch Buddy system pairs an adult with an at risk primary student.  Vancouver WA has a very active system.

The student I have had for the last 18 months is great company, makes me laugh, does well in school and seems to have no problems whatsoever.

Yesterday we were sitting across from another Lunch Buddy pair and the other adult asked his student how the family was doing.  He replied that both parents were out of work and the father was especially having trouble finding work because he had been in jail three times.  My student says in a loud voice in a room full of people "That's nothing, my Dad's been in jail way more than that!"

Only 4th grade boys!

I guess I now know why the school categorized my guy as at risk.

Volunteer - it's probably more productive than what you're doing at work.
