technology: Faster, More Accurate Appraisals - 12/01/09 03:53 PM
I've always been a fan of using technology. I've reported in the past about switching from paper and tape appraisal inspections to laser and pocket pc or tablet pc. Taking the leap from one to the other takes a little getting used to, but if you ease into, it will take forever to get the hang of it and reap the benefits. Last month A la mode released a new version of their appraisal software that works on the iPhone. it's still in beta testing right now, so it's not perfect. That said, I've tried it out on several inspections with (5 comments)
technology: New appraisal inspection tool - 07/11/08 06:05 PM
During these hot months in Bakersfield I need any edge I can get to speed up my appraisal inspections without sacrificing quality. Of course with most loans going FHA these days with my clients, the inspection is a little bit slower than for a conventional loan to begin with. Over the years I've embraced new technology: dropped paper and pen for a PDA with sketching software; turned in the wheel for a disto laser; upgraded the disto laser to one with bluetooth to send measurement directly to the PDA; upgraded to a wide-angle camera; bought a telescoping ladder for those FHA (13 comments)
technology: Zaio takes another step forward - 02/12/08 06:08 PM
There has been a lot of discussion about Zaio in the appraisal related forums. Many have commented about the concept that Zaio has undertaken, but I don't know that there is a concensus out there yet. Personally, I think this is a great concept, but I think execution has been poor. Today, Zaio announced another acquisition: Appraisal.com. Appraisal.com is an ordering portal, like Appraisalport, that was started by Day One. Specifically they've acquired the technology assets of the company. Whether that means they will be running the day-to-day operations of Appraisal.com I don't know. It may include the appraisal software that Day (24 comments)
technology: Read it on Google - 11/28/07 03:32 PM
Google is becoming quite the powerhouse with all the services (most of which are free) they offer. They are going head-to-head with Microsoft Office, all smartphone platforms, Mapquest, etc., etc. You name it, they are probably working on it or buying it. I recently opened a gmail account for personal email and such, so I set up iGoogle as my home page. iGoogle lets you customize content just like many of the others out there. I recently set up Google Readeron my iGoogle page to read blogs and news feeds right on my home page. On the iGoogle page, it provides a (18 comments)
technology: Business card and receipt software - 10/31/07 10:12 PM
My internet connection has basically been down off and on for two days. I think the service disruption is fixed after I had a 4 hour window to wait through for a tech to show up. During my down time I thought I try out some features of a program I use to scan and track all my receipts. It's aptly called NeatReceipts Professional. The system costs around $200 and includes a miniature scanner. Just insert your receipt, hit scan, and the software extracts data from the receipt pre-filling many fields. It pulls the vendor name, payment type, receipt amount, etc. It's not (1 comments)
technology: Do you have an ISP backup? - 10/30/07 10:34 AM
I was working late last night and debating about wether to stop working and get up early to start again or work into the wee hours of the morning. In the past I typically worked unitl 2 or 3 in the morning, but I've switched to getting to bed earlier and waking early to start over. I posted on this very topic last night, the last thing I did for the night, to see what other people do. Last night I decided to quit "early" and restart this morning. Well, to my surprise this morning, I discovered that my internet service (7 comments)
