I read an interesting article on the above topic and they referenced the Trulia Real Estate site's quarterly Index on Renting vs Buying.   Trulia uses a formula where you take the average rent for an area, multiply times 12 months and than further multiply by 15.  If that resulting number is less than the Median price of a home in the same area, then one would be better off renting.  If that value is greater than the median price of a home, then one would be better off buying. york county home sales and home prices: MAINE HOME SALES UP 10.74% IN JANUARY -PRICES STABLE - 02/24/11 09:17 AM
Sales of single family existing homes in Maine increased in January.  Total sales this January were 536 homes compared with 484 for the same period one year earlier.
The median sales price for both periods was unchanged, at $160,000, showing stability of sales price.
For York County Homes for sale in particular, rolling quartery statistics were also released, comparing the 3 months of Nov-Jan of 2009/2010 with the same 3 months 2010/2011.  Those numbers showed York County Home Sales went from 423 to 353, but the median sales price of those homes rose from $199,500 to $215,000.
