Germantown NY - 01/30/08 10:48 PM

Germantown  NY was first settled by refugees from Rhineland Germany in 1710.  This town can be found in Columbia county and lies between Clermont and Hudson.
In the past this was once a big farming community but many of the farms are no longer in operation.   Now  Taconic Farms Facilty  is a major source of employment in the area.
Germantown is also a favorite destination for many weekenders and is located just about 100 miles from NY City.
Another great feature about Germantown is that it is located along the Hudson River so you will find many wonderful homes on its bank … (4 comments)

Dutchess County written history - 01/30/08 09:13 PM
Dutchess County written history
Recently I caught the end of a story on NPR, someone had died and they were lamenting the fact that the language she spoke died with her.  Over the years I heard of many languages that were lost because they were never written.
With this in mind I wanted to see how Dutchess County cared for the history of the area.  It was good to find out that each town and some villages have a town historian .  Having a town historian made sense because such a person would be able to be more detailed about a specific area than … (12 comments)

Dutchess county Market Report December 2007 - 01/21/08 11:21 PM

The trend of falling median and average price continued into December.  It would take over a year and four months to clear the present inventory. This market continues to experience a slow down in new construction, lots of resale to choose from however we are seeing an increase in short sales and foreclosures.  With this in mind it is still a good time to purchase as long as you have good credit and can secure a mortgage.
Breakdown of the numbers for single family detached
Median Selling Price - $310,000 a decrease of  11.4 % from December 2006
Average Selling Price - $402,267 a decrease of 2.4 %  from December 2006

Gallatin NY - 01/17/08 01:50 AM
Gallatin is a small town in southern Columbia County with a population of less than 2000 people.  This town just like Ancram is another place you will find many second homes tucked away down very long driveways.
This is also an agricultural area so you will come across large farms; it is also very common to see cows grazing and horses galloping .

This time of year it is not uncommon to hear of people losing their home as a result of a fire.  Some of these destructive fires could be avoided if a  fire extinguisher was in place.
Did you know there are many types of fire extinguisher? and not all of them work the same way.  It is therefore  important to  make the right choice when choosing one.  Using the wrong type can be a disaster.

Today's Library is not your Grandparents Library - 01/08/08 12:37 AM

THE RED HOOK LIBRARY
I truly believe that  a community is not complete without a library.  I remember a time in my life when going to the library or bookstore then staying up late to read was what I considered as fun.
Today I am just like everyone, life is hectic and  because of the Internet not too many people now see the inside of a library.
Recently my son-in-law has been going to the library very frequently.  You might be asking why a twenty- something would find the library so valuable.
Today's library no longer requires you to go through the catalog … (16 comments)

Adams Fairacre Farm - 01/06/08 08:28 PM

 Adams Fairacre in Kingston NY
It is not uncommon to be asked by a buyer new to the area where is the best place to shop for produce.  Their next question sometimes pertains to landscaping.  One option I alway give them is Adams Fairacre Farm  since you can find it all under one roof.
To understand the appeal of this place you need to take a look at its history. This business was started by Ralph Adams in 1919 and the first location was a roadside farm market  in Poughkeepsie.  This has now expanded into three full service markets located in Poughkeepsie , Kingston and Newburgh.  … (12 comments)

Dutchess County EMS and Fire Departments - 01/06/08 12:03 PM
Dutchess County EMS and Fire Departments
When moving to a new area it is also important to checkout the emergency medical services in place and the location of the fire departments.
These days, before you can even close on a house the insurance company is also interested in knowing where your new home will be located in relationship to the fire house.    The closer you are the cheaper your insurance will be.   Some of us who want a more quiet life will be willing to fork over a few extra dollars just to be further away.
Dutchess County provides many useful resources to … (9 comments)
