Daffodil Garden 2008

In Running Springs there is a wonderful area called Smiley Park. Smiley Park was hit hard by the recent So-Cal wildfires. I was taking pictures in the area a few weeks ago and this was one of the houses:

Today I was taking photos in the area again and visited the Daffodil Garden. I had heard the garden burned in the fire, but was hopeful that the flowers would bloom anyway. Much to my delight, the owner's home did not burn, the neighboring church did not burn and the Daffodils were spectacular! It was a wonderful day and a very special treat for me! The garden is open for a very limited time. Only from March 22, 2008 to April 6, 2008 and is open to visitors after 10am. If you've never been, you are missing a wonderful gift. You can see a lot of the burn area that surrounds this garden, but to me it makes it that much more special. Again, I am reminded how blessed I am to live here.

To have this weather with the coming Holiday weekend is a true blessing. While I appreciate all weather that we experience, there is something remarkable about driving by the lake on a Sunny morning that makes me want to play outside! I will have to make time to go for a walk today and really enjoy this gift! My daughter starts softball today, which I love since it gives me the opportunity to go outside and watch the kids have fun. It's hard to believe just a few days ago we had snow!

Real Estate Agents, Be Careful!

Agents beware!

When I first came into the business, I heard several long-time agents talk about being aware and proceeding carefully when showing property to strangers. Our office has even offered classes where basic defense skills were taught. Also, we were warned to ALWAYS meet clients at the office and if we are uncomfortable with a new person we have a "code" with the front desk where they will call and check on us after 15 minutes or so.

Since the market has slowed some, we don't have quite as many opportunities to show property. If someone called me to show a house tomorrow I would jump for joy and run out with my keys in hand.

But what if that house is vacant and this person is a stranger?

This happened last week in Corona, CA not too far from us. The woman (agent) was raped and stabbed repeatedly. This story, unfortunately, is not the only one of its kind, but serves as a reminder to keep our guard up.

This isn't something we like to think about, but should always keep in the back of our minds. Luckily this bad guy is in jail now!

San Bernardino Mountains: Even Bald Eagles vacation here

Bald Eagle Census

"Big Bear Lake, CA - The fourth and final bald eagle census of 2008 spotted six (6) adults and two (2) immatures as volunteers spent an hour last Saturday observing eagles at several mountain area lakes....

Eleven volunteers at Lake Arrowhead observed one (1) adult bald eagle. Twenty-two volunteers observed two (2) adult eagles at Lake Hemet. Volunteers at Lake Silverwood observed two (2) adults....

Thus a total of at least eight (8) bald eagles (6 adults, 2 immature) are currently spending their winter vacations in the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains."

Apparently since the lakes and rivers up north freeze in the winter and ours do not, the Bald Eagles choose to vacation here.

I have to agree! What a great place to vacation, not only for the great food, but also all of the beauty and entertainment mountain-wide.

San Bernardino Mountains: A Day in the Dirt

The San Bernardino Mountains has a lot to offer. One of our favorite things to do is take our Jeep out on the trails that are right in our backyard! The trails range from easy to difficult and are well marked. There are many places to pick up a map and an Adventure Pass, we usually go to Cedar Glen Hardware for ours, but any Ranger Station will do.

According to the San Bernardino National Forest website: "The Off-Highway Vehicle system on the San Bernardino National Forest is one of the best in Southern California. A variety of experiences and a large number of miles are available for 4-wheel driving, ATV, UTV and motorcycle use.

The Forest OHV system is comprised of designated routes and trails primarily in Cajon Pass, North Lake Arrowhead, North and East of Big Bear, and West of Idyllwild. The forest does not have "open areas" for hill-climbing activities, cross country travel or motor cross tracks for racing.

The Forest offers 42 miles of 24-50" trails with an additional 166 miles of forest roads available for green sticker/red sticker use. There are 903 miles of road open to Sport Utility Vehicle and four wheel drive vehicle travel (104 miles of which are primarily 4x4 routes). The OHV system offers a wide range of experience levels including novice, intermediate, and expert levels and signed easiest, more difficult, and most difficult....Lake Arrowhead - Plan to visit the Pinnacles Staging area located north of Lake Arrowhead on State Highway 173." Spring Forward! A Great Time for Real Estate

It's that time again!

I love daylight savings time. It makes me want to go outside for a walk, it reminds me that swimsuit season is coming and motivates me to get outside! It's also great for Real Estate, we see a definite increase in inventory come Spring. This year we are expecting to see an even bigger increase because we had such a generous amount of snow and rainfall. Someone in our area has come up with the term "U-Haul Winter", that is, we had so much snow that some people are going to be ready to head for warmer climates!

I googled Daylight Savings and discovered that the time fram has increased by one month!

"Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time is extended one month and begins for most of the United States at:
2 a.m. on the Second Sunday in March

and lasts until

2 a.m. on the First Sunday of November."

I read on to remind myself why we do observe Daylight Savings Time and discovered it started with the Railroad trying to get on a standard schedule. My husband works for the railroad, I should have known this was their doing :)

The China Study - Vegetarian?

So I am reading The China Study, and in a nutshell being a vegetarian, actually a Vegan, will save your life! Please don't ask me to justify this, I am having a personal struggle with this fact. The evidence is unbelievably clear and I cannot deny the truth. Can I really change this much? I am not sure whether I can do it. I will need help. Please read the book and talk to me about your thoughts.....I need help. I do not want to feed my daughter Cancer and that's what I've been doing. I need some discipline and some help!

I actually wrote this blog awhile ago on Myspace, but thought I'd repost it here to see if more people have read this book in our industry. Since the time I read this , I've been a little lax in my Vegan-style eating. I found myself eating a lot of carbs and a lot of junk food in order to stay away from meat. While I am certain that is not the answer, I wonder how to find balance in this all-or-nothing type diet. I see the benefits and when I was being disciplined I felt better, I looked better and saw real value.

My issue is with the busy Real Estate lifestyle, how do you fit in the constant prepared foods. I learned to make some excellent salads and wonderful fruit salads and do really enjoy those, but I slip when I'm on a time crunch which seems to be more often than not.

Have any of you read this? Are you living the lifestyle? Has anybody found a deviation that works?

Recently I've been working with a bank doing BPO's (Broker's price opinions) and listing foreclosure properties. The first property I was asked to list has an occupant. The occupant is the owner and her husband just passed away. So along with losing her partner, she's now losing everything else.

I am the type of person who wants to adopt every mistreated child or animal. Needless to say, being put in the position of evicting this nice lady is very difficult.

I sought out a few associates who have more experience with evictions for some tips. The best advice I received was to maintain a level of professionalism because every single person who loses their home has a story. I thought about this for awhile, and I was better able to correspond with the owner.

Although I couldn't completely separate from this person, I offered lists of rentals and phone numbers for assistance programs and numbers for pet adoption help. I stopped there. I did not call every day, I didn't take her to lunch and make her problems my problems. The owner and I have a good, but professional relationship.

While I could have probably drawn even finer lines and offered less help than I did, I think I found a good balance. It will be a constant work in progress for me as I work this business.
