The centennial season of theSan Diego Symphony!
The centennial season of the San Diego Symphony opens this Friday, October 8, at Copley Symphony Hall under the direction of Conductor Jahja Ling.
Although the 2010-2011 season is being promoted as the centennial season, fiscal problems that seem to be inherent to symphonies and opera organizations caused the San Diego Symphony to cancel seasons from 1921-1926, 1936-1948, and from 1996-1998 while it was … (6 comments)

classical music: Teaching is just like being a Realtor - 01/18/10 02:59 PM
Itshak Perlman is coming to San Diego this coming weekend. More importantly, he's bringing his violin with him, and even more important than that is that he's going to play his violin in a recital open to the public.
Perlman is one of my four favorite violints, the others being Joshua Bell, Yehudi Menuhin, and Isaac Stern. Tickets range from $30 to $300, and a certain someone in this household, who grew up playing the violin, was able to get us tickets to go see him play his violin.
Perlman is 64 now and spends a lot of time teaching and mentoring young … (11 comments)

classical music: The ActiveRain Symphony Station: One of our own (me!) performs Claude Debussy at Pacific Regent in La Jolla - 11/07/09 02:03 PM
For those coming into town for the 2009 Convention of the National Association of Realtors, I will be performing in my chamber music group on Friday afternoon, November 13, at 4:00 p.m., at the Pacific Regent in La Jolla, 3890 Nobel Drive.
The concert should last about 1½ hours, and the public is welcome, so if anyone wants to come up to La Jolla, enjoy a bit of classical music, and then go out totour La Jolla afterwards and possibly have something to eat, call Russel Ray at 619-341-0173 (he also happens to be my page turner for the concert). Keep … (8 comments)

classical music: Free concert in La Jolla tonight featuring yours truly - 08/07/09 10:57 AM
One of the things that I do to relax is play the piano, both in the privacy of my own home, with some chamber music groups in San Diego, and occasionally in a concert.
Tonight (8/7/09) at 7:00 p.m., Joanne Regenhardt (narrator), Janelle Destefano (mezzo soprano), and I (piano) will be performing Achille Claude Debussy -- Flower Child, Impressionist, Revolutionary for residents of The White Sands of La Jolla, 7450 Olivetas Avenue, La Jolla. The concert is free and should last about 1½ hours. While the concert generally is not open to the public, friends and guests of the performers are … (12 comments)

classical music: Classical music at President Obama's inauguration - 01/24/09 01:09 PM
I didn't get a chance to watch President's inauguration, but I saw in the paper the next day that they had a chamber music group comprised of Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Itzhak Perlman (violin), Anthony McGill (clarinet), and Gabriela Montero (piano) performing "Air and Simple Gifts," by John Williams, a pianist, composer, and conductor.

You might not be familiar with John Williams, but I know you're familiar with many of the theme songs and music that he has composed:
1984, 1988, 1996, and 2002 Olympics The Accidental Tourist Black Sunday Born on the Fourth of July Catch Me If You Can (I'm watching … (26 comments)

classical music: My final Rachmaninoff concert - 01/18/09 12:50 PM
For the last year I've been performing with a chamber music group comprised of a pianist (me!), a mezzo-soprano, and a narrator. We had our last of five "Rachmaninoff -- Letters and Notes" concerts today. We were at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library, a beautiful facility in a beautiful setting:

Here's the program and biographies of the performers:

My marketing guru was my page turner, so we couldn't get any pictures during the concert, but here's some pictures of the rehearsal immediately before the concert, and the last two pictures are of the … (18 comments)
