dogs: It's the dog days of summer at Petco Park on July 27! - 07/08/11 08:53 AM

It's the dog days of summer at Petco Park on July 27!
Although the San Diego Padres currently reside in second-to-last place in the National League West standings with a 40-49 record, that's not the dog days of summer that I'm talking about!
On July 27, prior to the game, which begins at 7:05 p.m., San Diegans will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for most dogs at a professional sporting event. Who comes up with these world records?
This is an annual event, sponsored by Petco — yes, the same Petco that's in the name Petco … (7 comments)

dogs: Santee parks will soon be welcoming our fine, furry, four-legged friends (dogs, that is)! - 02/25/11 10:29 AM

This is one of a series titledOut & About with Jim Frimmer, your Realtor in Mission Valley.Read others in this series by clicking on Out & About.

Santee parks will soon be welcomingour fine, furry, four-legged friends(dogs, that is)!
The East County city of Santee has decided to join the several other cities that have fenced park areas for our dogs to roam freely.
Although dogs previously were allowed to roam without leashes in restricted areas of the parks and during specific times, these new fenced areas for 24 hour roaming will be a first. Unfortunately, the City Council … (4 comments)

dogs: Out & About San Diego with Jim Frimmer, Your Mission Valley Realtor — FIDO does more than just poop - 11/21/10 02:51 PM

FIDO does more than just poop
Every four months, upwards of 200 volunteers gather to remove trash and debris from San Diego's largest off-leash recreation area. These aren't just any volunteers, though. They are FIDO! Or Fiesta Island Dog Owners.
FIDO's recent effort resulted in 130 volunteers removing over 500 pounds of trash from the south end of Fiesta Island, an area that is always in the running as a prime site for development. FIDO's efforts to keep the site clean is also meant to keep the site out of the hands of developers, and FIDO's message is coming through … (12 comments)

dogs: Where does Zoey the Cool Cat rank? - 07/11/10 03:02 PM
According to Veterinary Pet Insurance, the most popular name for pets is Max. Whatever happened to Spot, Rover, Fido, and Lassie?
Apparently classic pet names have given way to human names, possibly because human names make our pets seem more like part of the family.
However, Veterinary Pet Insurance also reports some of the more unusual names, such as Snag L. Tooth, Ginger Snap, and Munchie. Then, of course, there are the typical pet names provided by college students: Cold One, Brew, Little Sh*t, Pizza, and Cheeseburger.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the complete list so I don't know where Zoey the … (9 comments)

dogs: Something's just not right - 06/25/10 01:35 PM
Since the new Elephant Odyssey opened at the San Diego Zoo last year, the old Hoof Mesa has been half empty with just the giraffes and the rhinos there.
Recently, though, they've refurbished some of the older pens. One is now a new flamingo lagoon, giving the Zoo two such lagoons. Others hold a kangaroo and a Mediterranean miniature donkey, both new to the Zoo, and a fourth one is a new Ambassador pen.
In the Ambassador pen, you can see any of the many animals that are taken to schools, conventions, and other meetings as official Ambassadors of the San … (14 comments)

dogs: What do cats, dogs, and pigs have in common? - 06/19/10 02:21 PM
One of my daily reading books is Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days. If you're a cat lover, and you don't have this book, you're missing out.
One of the best things about The Cat Lover's Book of Days is that it's not like other books of days because there are no years involved. That means that you can read this book over and over again each year. Get your own copy right here.
Meanwhile, the answer to the title question is, US!
Dogs look up to us.

Cats look down on us.

And pigs treat us … (6 comments)

dogs: Dog and cat sales to be banned in West Hollywood, California - 03/07/10 02:53 PM
Southern California's answer to the City of Berkeley and San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury District is West Hollywood.
All three areas are known to be a little out of the ordinary, a little quirky, a little unusual....
West Hollywood recognizes pets as companions and their owners as guardians, but in an effort to curb the sale of cats and dogs from "kitty factories" and "puppy mills," beginning September 1, 2010, the sale of cats and dogs within the city limits will be illegal. Pet shops will be permitted to offer animals from shelters, similar to what many pet shops here in San Diego … (5 comments)

dogs: Calling all dog owners and dog lovers! - 01/31/10 01:27 PM
I was reading an article today titled "Military dogs in Afghanistan short on chow."
Dogs have been used in combat since World War I to find bombs, the missing, and the dead. In Afghanistan they are doing heavy duty work searching for roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices.
The United States has about 2,800 military dogs, the largest canine force in the world. Military dogs and those working on police and rescue units need special dog food because of their energy-draining missions. They can't just eat scraps like our backyard dogs can. Unfortunately, when it comes to moving supplies into Afghanistan, … (4 comments)

dogs: Saturday smiles: What pets do when we're away - 01/16/10 04:34 PM
Did you have a tough week?
Snow in the north.
Ice and cold in the south and southeast.
Heat in the southwest (76°F today).
Grumpy Clients, grumpy family....
Purina recently told us what cats do when their staff is away, but I think their research is faulty. Courtesy of my mother-in-law via email, here are some pictures of what our pets really do when we're away:

dogs: If you have to, just smile! - 01/10/10 07:45 AM
Three secrets for working with people:
If they are rude, obnoxious, mean, unruly, etc., "kill 'em with kindness." Don't let them know that they are bothering you. Instead, once they pay you, take their money and donate as much of it as you can to a charitable organization in their honor. Listen to them, and breathe. It's very rare that you know exactly what is going on in their lives at any specific moment, so it's okay to listen to them. They might have something very bad happening to them right now and just need to vent, rant, and rave, kind … (27 comments)

dogs: Stepping up to the plate: Tails of Kensington 2010 - 12/20/09 02:05 PM
With the economy having been in a swoon for a few years now, public and community services like libraries, fire fighting, and law enforcement are still being cut.
Margaret Downing, who lives in the Kensington neighborhood, has stepped up to do her part. In 2008, Margaret and her husband, Rex, who run a real estate brokerage, published Kensington's first dog calendar.
For the 2010 calendar, more than 100 dogs showed up for their calendar auditions, which cost $10 each. There were so many great dogs that Margaret decided to issue an 18-month calendar and include smaller pictures of many of the … (4 comments)

dogs: Does your dog have the flu? - 12/13/09 10:34 AM
I got an email from an old high school friend that I reconnected with recently through Facebook, yet I still don't have Facebook set up the way I'd like it to be. Talk about a hassle. That's for another time, though.
She didn't remember whether I had a cat or a dog -- I have a cat -- but apparently there is a new flu going around that only affects dogs. The flu was first identified in 2003 in Florida but has spread to thirty other states. It is said to be a year-round flu and highly contagious. Fortunately, there's a … (7 comments)

dogs: Top 10 tips to stay safe around dogs and cats - 10/18/09 11:44 AM
Most of the time when I go with Clients to show a property, the MLS listing sheet has warned me ahead of time:
Dogs in back yard! Indoor cats. Please don't let them out! Mommy dog with puppies in garage. Dogs in master bedroom (probably on pillows) Protective mom cat with one kitten  For that one out of ten times that such information is not conveyed, or when mommy dog has escaped from the garage into the yard or house, or just when you're at your own home and a dog or cat shows up unexpectedly, here's ten tips to stay … (4 comments)

dogs: Dog owners rejoice! - 09/27/09 11:33 AM
Our local newspaper seems to have turned into a newspaper about all things pets. Recently we got news of Pet Airways, and now comes news from Ithaca, New York, of a pilot project by the Tompkins County Dog Owners Group and Cayuga Compost.
Their intent is to create a company to compost the tons of dog poop left behind by the city's 50,000 dogs each year. Apparently it will take 2-3 years to compost the dog poop and make it available to the general public for deep filling purposes. Dog poop contains parasites and pathogens that make it unsuitable as compost … (5 comments)

dogs: San Diego's Mission Valley condos with Realtor Jim Frimmer: Dog beaches and parks - 09/06/09 01:48 PM
A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis Volz, a State Farm Insurance agent and member of ActiveRain. I was even able to send him some business, but since the purchase didn't go through, I guess he didn't get to write a policy. I'll keep trying though.
Dennis sends out the best, most informative post cards. Always something good. One of the best listed all the dog beaches and parks in San Diego County. Since many people living in Mission Valley condos have dogs, I thought my blog would be a great place to put a list … (7 comments)

dogs: Mission Valley condos, San Diego CA: This dog probably doesn't qualify for your condo companion - 08/30/09 10:36 AM
The world's tallest dog died a couple of weeks ago from bone cancer. Gibson, a Harlequin Great Dane from Grass Valley, California, measured in at 42.2 inches at the shoulder.
Titan, a Great Dane from North Park, right here in San Diego, California, is poised to ascend to the throne as the world's tallest dog, measuring in at 42.375 inches during a "dry run" a week ago. With a name like Titan, it's obvious he's a natural.
Check out the complete story with pictures at SignOnSanDiego.
Most Mission Valley condos will allow you to have a pet, sometimes two, but there are … (8 comments)

dogs: What do these have in common? - 08/20/09 05:54 PM
What do the following all have in common:
urine feces vomit pet odors rotting garbage sweat skunk Answer:
I'm pretty sure we can all agree that they, uh, stink. Recently I received an email from my mom -- I get several from her each week -- about an odor product called SCOE 10X. She swears by it, and she doesn't swear, so it must be good.
In looking it up on the Internet, it does seem to be getting rave reviews. If anyone tries it, let us cat and dog people know how it works.

dogs: Are you a cat or dog expert? - 07/22/09 10:48 AM
Ever since adopting a feral black cat back in 2006, and now having Zoey the Cool Cat, I've been subscribing to various pet sites and newsletters.
One of the sites I like best is petcentric.com: "Places to go. Things to sniff. All things pet." If you remember that it is "Brought to you by Purina" and can get past the Purina advertising and "all things Purina" there is a lot of good information.
For example, the following two quizzes came in my Petcentric newsletter yesterday. Take them and see if you really are a cat or dog expert.

dogs: Tips for buying pets in California - 06/01/09 03:54 PM
Many pet stores have agreements with animal shelters to put a certain number of animal shelter pets up for adoption each week.
Some pet stores also have contracts with various breeders.
And if you desire a thoroughbred, especially of a rare breed, you can always go directly to the breeder himself.
There are several things to do to ensure a healthy pet, regardless of whether you are choosing an animal shelter pet, a pet store pet, or a pet from any individual breeder:
Make sure the animal has been seen by a veterinarian. Make sure dogs or cats are spayed or … (15 comments)

dogs: SST (Speechless Sunday with Text): Prejudice declined - 05/24/09 06:28 AM
It's hard to believe that the week is already gone. I've been so busy that my most recent blog post is from last Sunday. Looks like I have some work to do today.
Let's start off my blogging work today with an "SST (Speechless Sunday with Text)" post.
As some readers might remember, my mom likes to send me emails with funny pictures and jokes. Following is a precious picture of a dog and cat who seem to have made amends for an ageless battle that they should be fighting with each other. See what can happen when we all work … (12 comments)
