Final Spooky Sleepoverat the San Diego Zoo is October 29-30 The final 2011 Spooky Sleepover at the San Diego Zoo is this weekend. Dr. Zoolittle and his spooky little helpers will entertain you with creepy crafts and spooky critters. There's a costume parade, you can take an eerie bus tour, trick-or-treat around the Reptile House, make Halloween s'mores, and listen to ghost stories around the campfire at the haunted Camp Timbuktu. There will be a special night prowl around the Zoo, and on Sunday morning a delicious buffet breakfast at Elephant Odyssey, after which you can watch the zookeepers provide pumpkins to

halloween: Why children don't trick or treat anymore - 10/31/10 06:20 PM
Why children don't trick or treat anymore Authorities throughout Southern California are asking parents to inspect any Halloween treats that their children bring home, including candles and drinks. Apparently marijuana-laced products have been found in several areas, mostly in the Los Angeles metroplex. Marijuana-laced products are packaged to look like commercially available products and to specifically appeal to children for Halloween. These include not only the aforementioned candles and drinks, but also candies and cereal snacks. These types of products present health threats due to the concentrated amounts of marijuana, and many of them are prepared in unknown, perhaps unsanitary,

halloween: Don't let the spooks spook your pets! - 10/31/10 01:48 PM
Don't let the spooks spook your pets! I know we're all anticipating the little spooks arriving at our houses this evening looking for treats, and threatening tricks, but don't forget our other little spooks, more popularly known as pets. All the noise — doorbells ringing, unknown voices, laughter, doors slamming, children screaming with excitement over their latest goodies — can be very traumatic for our pets. Here are some tips to help your pets make it through the evening: Keep your pets in a room far away from the Halloween action, preferably in a place that they are familiar with. If your pet is

halloween: Out & About San Diego with Jim Frimmer, Your Mission Valley Realtor — Halloween and the Creepy Crawly Festival at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park - 10/26/10 09:08 PM
Halloween and the Creepy Crawly Festivalat the San Diego Zoo Safari Park If you have so much fun with Halloween that you would like to prolong it a couple of weeks, you need to check out the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Creepy Crawly Festival. Not only will you find the typical Halloween decorations done to the extreme — spiders and spiderwebs, ghosts, goblins, ghouls — but on weekends through November 13, you'll enjoy things that you never thought you'd enjoy, such as lady bug releases — who can resist the cuteness of little ladybugs? a cockroach petting zoo —

halloween: We have a new cemetery in the neighborhood! - 10/12/10 03:58 PM
We have a new cemetery in the neighborhood! On my first visit to New Orleans I took a tour of a cemetery. That just didn't sound right when I was touring, but eversince then I tend to notice cemeteries. I don't rememberone in San Bernardino where I grew up, and I know ofonly two here in San Diego. Outside of New Orleans, the only cemetery I visited is the National Cemetery inRiverside since my dad is buried there. Today, though, I found a new cemetery in the neighborhood.Seems it cropped up almost overnight: All photos ©2010 Russel Ray Photos Did you know

halloween: ATTENTION: Don't eat those pumpkin seeds! - 10/16/09 08:37 PM
If you carve your own pumpkin rather than buying one of those plastic or ceramic ones, and you either throw away the seeds or roast them in the oven to eat, it's VERY IMPORTANT that you follow these instructions before doing either of those. First, wash the seeds thoroughly and let them dry. Second, count the number of seeds. This makes a great family or group event since there can be many, many seeds. You can even provide prizes to the person counting the most seeds. If you do more than one pumpkin, provide a prize to the person with the
