hummingbirds: I caught my first hummingbird! - 06/20/10 11:52 PM
Well, I didn't actually catch it in my hand or anything like that, but I did catch it on film, so to speak.
One of my favorite flowers is called a lion's tail because of the way it blooms, then puts out another section of stalk, blooms again, and just keeps going and going and going, kind of like the Energizer Bunny.
We have some on the back part of our upper lot, and they are looking beautiful right now.

 
Since it has orange, tubular flowers, the hummingbirds love it.

If you get a chance, watch the Nature program Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air on PBS this month.
I had the opportunity to watch it late last night, and it is absolutely amazing to watch these little birds fly in slow motion.
Something I never knew was that hummingbirds also have to eat, something more than just flower nectar. They actually eat insects to get their protein, and one of the researchers has slow-motion video of how hummingbirds, with their long beaks, hunt insects. Quite fascinating.
