One of San Diego's largest annual conventions begins tomorrow and plays through Sunday at the San Diego Convention Center downtown. The convention has been sold out since for a year now, so unless you have a ticket, you won't be getting in. However, you can go downtown, eat in the Gaslamp Quarter or sit at the Trolley stops, and do some people watching, which is what I'm going to do. There is no telling what you'll see.

Balboa Park had its beginnings in 1835 when California was still under control of Mexico. New San Diego City officials set aside 47,000 acres of land for recreational purposes. Part of that acreage is now Balboa Park, making it one of the oldest areas in the country dedicated to public recreation.

That's the N.R.P. Sagres, a 294-foot, three-masted, barque-rigged military training ship from Portugal. It is a sister ship to the United States Coast Guard's ship Eagle. It is named for the Cape of Sagres, the southwest end of Portugal where explorers throughout history left for the high seas and the unknown.
