photography: Zoey the Cool Cat needs YOUR vote! - 05/16/11 10:10 PM

Zoey the Cool Cat needs YOUR vote!
Zoey the Cool Cat entered herself in the Great American Photo Contest. I don't know how she did it, but she would appreciate it if you would vote for her. Here is the picture she entered:

When we got her from the El Cajon Animal Shelter, her name was simply Zoey. That picture was taken on the first day, late that evening and is what caused us to add "the Cool Cat" to her name.
To vote for our ActiveRain star simply go here: Zoey the Cool Cat in the … (10 comments)

photography: Create historic photos to market a historic house - 07/27/10 11:04 AM
One of the things that I always find funny when I'm watching big sporting events is the thousands of people taking pictures. You know they are taking pictures because you can see the camera flashes going off. I'm pretty sure that the camera flash has absolutely no effect on what they are taking a picture of, unless all of them are taking pictures of each other.
SLR cameras have always allowed the user to use flash in many different ways, and one of the ways that my new handy dandy Canon 550D lets me use flash is by setting the intensity … (15 comments)

This is a picture of the front of the Santa Fe Railroad Depot in downtown San Diego. I love water fountains, especially this one.

photography: How to clean up your house using your digital camera - 07/11/10 04:21 PM
Is your home turning into piles of magazines and newspapers?
For those of us who still read books, newspapers, and magazines, here's a handy dandy little tip on what to do with interesting articles about things to do and places to go.
My marketing guru, whom I've known for sixteen years, is an article cutter-outer.
Unfortunately, he also refuses to throw something away that he has subscribed to unless he has read it first to see if there are any articles that should be cut out, which is why our home looks like this:

Now don't get … (13 comments)

photography: Speechless Sunday: If you're out of place, just make sure you're bigger than everyone else - 07/04/10 08:53 PM
Courtesy of my marketing guru who got me involved here at ActiveRain, and my husband who bought us a "handy dandy Canon" digital SLR camera, I find myself more and more looking at the things around me.
Pictures can not only inspire you, but the mere act of taking pictures seems to be very relaxing.
Following is one of my favorite pictures from this last week. I tagged it, "If you're out of place, just make sure you're bigger than everyone else."

photography: Blacks Beach at high tide - 06/12/10 10:58 PM
San Diego has an interesting coastline because there are flat beaches, tourist trap beaches, and beaches with 400-foot cliffs as the backdrop, like this one:

That is Blacks Beach at high tide. Blacks Beach is one of the world's largest clothing optional beaches and, as you can see, the sand has a black tint to it.
On the bluffs above Blacks Beach are the Salk Institute, founded by Jonas Salk, the creator of the polio vaccine; the University of California at San Diego, one of the nation's top 10 research universities; and the Torrey Pines Golf Course, home of the … (15 comments)

photography: She still has her looks.... - 05/07/10 09:02 PM
Getting close to a giraffe is never easy, even for someone like me who is 6'4" tall. That's when telephoto lenses and extenders come in handy.
For example, this little lady giraffe, who had a 150-pound baby last September, still has her looks, wouldn't you say?

photography: Nose to nose with a meerkat.... - 05/07/10 08:50 AM
I had a great time at the San Diego Zoo yesterday with some friends of mine.
While they oohed and aahed at all the wildlife and pretty flowers, I was testing our new 2x extender for our Canon Rebel XSi.
The meerkats are always a great source of great entertainment — lots of oohing, aahing — scurrying about, digging in the soil, and sitting up on their hind legs to see who's watching them.
The new 2x extender allows us to get really up close to them, nose to nose you might say:

photography: Name that photo! - 01/03/10 09:29 PM
After my open house today, where I acquired a couple as new Clients, I went to Birth Aquarium with them since the Aquarium has an exhibit on sea horses that is going to close this month.
Although I enjoy going to the Aquarium here, it does not rank in my top 10, which is kind of odd since San Diego is such a beautiful ocean-side city, and there seems to be a lot of space where they could expand the Aquarium.
I have 187 pictures from the Aquarium, so I thought I would at least play "Name that photo" with one … (7 comments)

photography: Playing with light - 11/15/09 08:21 PM
Ralph Gorgoglione commented on my recent post about lighting and silhouettes where I had used the photogenic Zoey the Cool Cat (picture at right) as my assistant.
He thought that my first attempt at playing with light was a "great start," but that maybe I could "move on to non-cat related subject matter."
I'm always hoping to please those around me -- Clients, ActiveRain members, co-workers, etc. -- so herewith is my attempt to play with lighting on non-cat related subject matter.
The following pictures were taken on the grounds of the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island, just across from the airport … (3 comments)

photography: My photography experiment with silhouettes - 11/15/09 07:31 PM
I've been exploring some of the more esoteric settings on our Canon Rebel XSi, especially those settings that allow me to adjust for poor lighting conditions, either because the main part of the picture is either overexposed or underexposed.
Eventually, of course, I'll have to start using some of this cool software that is available to help with bracketing, extended dynamic range, stitching, etc., with my goal being to be able to take better real estate pictures with windows that show something other than a bright spot in the picture. ☺ LOL ☺
Meanwhile, though, Zoey the Cool Cat is always … (10 comments)

Note that in California, according to Section 597 of the California State Penal Code, you have to be kind to wildlife:

Here's the wildlife that I was kind to today:

photography: SST (Speechless Sunday with Text): A good reason for being late - 07/12/09 04:15 PM
Russel Ray, who is my marketing guru, rewards his top five successful Marketing and Business Consulting clients with a trip to the San Diego Zoo at the end of each quarter.
Although Russel has always done my marketing for me -- for reasons obvious to readers in the know :) -- and I'm always qualified to go to the Zoo as one of his top Clients, I pass. I pass because, well, because I have an annual pass to the Zoo. Of course, I never miss an opportunity to go to the Zoo....

photography: FREE Windows 2000, XP, and Vista programs for reducing the size of your pictures - 06/12/09 08:54 PM
As digital cameras keep increasing the resolution -- and size! -- of digital pictures, and as pictures become more and more an integral part of the lives of Realtors, home inspectors, and others, if they haven't already, we increasingly need a way to manage the size of the digital picture files taking up space on our computers. And we won't even talk about digital video and audio files.
PROBLEM: A few months ago I bought a new computer running Windows Vista. A few weeks ago we got a new digital SLR camera, a Canon Rebel XSi. On our old Windows XP … (15 comments)
