Downtown San Diego from a Hornblower Harbor Cruise
If you happen to be in San Diego and near downtown when the sun is shining and the temperature is pleasant (around 76°F), I can highly recommend taking a two-hour cruise on Hornblower Harbor Cruises, which I did this afternoon. Following are a few pictures of downtown San Diego from out on the water.

No trip to San Diego would be complete without a ride over San Diego's signature piece of public art: the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.

Most of us know it simply as the Coronado Bridge because it lets us get quickly to the magnificent island of Coronado without having to buy a boat or drive around San Diego Bay — 15 miles down one side and then 15 miles back up the other side. … (8 comments)

san diego: One of my favorite San Diego skyscrapers - 03/14/10 11:54 PM
San Diego doesn't have a signature building like so many other cities do:
Empire State Building and Chrysler Building in New York City John Hancock Tower and the Sears Tower in Chicago Space Needle in Seattle However, there is one building which we call the Screwdriver Building that has always been one of my favorites:

It also happens to be San Diego's tallest skyscraper at exactly 500 feet tall. For some reason, that's the height limit on San Diego's skyscrapers. I don't know whether it's because the airport is right next to downtown or due to earthquakes. I'm guessing the … (7 comments)

san diego: Coronado Shores Towers: Luxury living on the beach - 02/05/10 11:22 PM
Way back in the 1960s and 1970s, a condo developer (probably from Florida) decided that the City of Coronado needed ten 15-story luxury condominium towers overlooking the city and its famous beaches.
At the time there were no zoning laws to prevent the developer from doing what developers like to do: develop!
While the first tower was being built, the City tried to enforce a 40-foot height limit, but there was no law in place stating such a limit. The City lost, and the first tower was completed in June 1971.
While subsequent condominium towers were being built, the City and … (8 comments)

san diego: Swamps in San Diego? - 01/31/10 10:38 PM
San Diego has some coastal areas featuring beaches (of course), tidepools (two of the remaining tidepools in Southern California), and lagoons.
Many of the lagoons were in the process of being destroyed in the name of progress until about a decade ago when people decided that the lagoons, and their wildlife, were worth preserving.
Many of the lagoons also have small streams that feed into them, small because we don't get much rain here. However, after last week's rains, many of those small streams make the tidepools and streams look like something from Louisiana or Florida.

san diego: The ActiveRain History Station: San Diego Rainmakers - 01/14/10 02:12 PM
San Diego gets an average of 11 inches of rain annually, most of it coming in December and January.
I think the only reason why the average annual rainfall is so high is because every seven or eight years we get deluged with 15-23 inches of rain, usually because of an El Niño winter.
It is not unusual for San Diego to suffer through several years of drought, but drought is a term used only when people are involved.
San Diego actually is a desert, and deserts typically don't get much rain. However, a desert with people that doesn't get much … (9 comments)

Well, vengeance is mine! Check out the following statistics for 2009, from Lindbergh Field, San Diego's official weather station. It looks like 2010 so far is wanting to give us more of the same so far.

san diego: Christmas Eve San Diego from Coronado Island - 12/27/09 07:33 PM
For the last 15 years, we've taken Christmas Eve off and driven around San Diego trying to catch Santa Claus and his reindeer flying through the air.
We've never been successful, but we usually find lots of light displays to take pictures of instead.
This year, however, seemed to be a bust. The neighborhoods that had the most magnificent displays for the past few years are also the neighborhoods that have been hardest hit by foreclosures. Perhaps there's a correlation?
Even the McMansions over on Coronado Island were severely lacking in holiday lighting displays this year, so we set up the camera … (12 comments)

san diego: Shopping to do but nowhere to park - 12/12/09 11:08 PM
San Diego County's largest, most prestigious, and most popular mall is Fashion Valley Shopping Center, and it's located at the western end of Mission Valley in the heart of San Diego.
It was renovated and expanded back in the late 1990s, with a huge transit station being built to handle traffic from busses and the San Diego Trolley. Three huge, multi-story parking garages were also built.
All of Mission Valley is a flood plain for the San Diego River, but the river, for the most part, is controlled. However, there are times with an El Niño winter season arrives and brings … (9 comments)

san diego: Mission Valley condos: If you spend too much time looking.... - 10/20/09 06:41 PM
There was a top-floor, ocean- and golf course-view condominium in Mission Valley that came on the market a couple of months ago.
My Buyers fell in love with it but told me, "We want to look around some more" even though it was exactly what they told me they were looking for, and the price was right -- more than right actually.
Unfortunately, top floor condominiums with ocean- and golf course-views in Mission Valley that are priced right -- or wrong! -- don't stay on the market for any length of time, and this one didn't either.
