Second Annual Cooper River Bassmasters Bass Tournament for Toys for Tots

On Saturday, November 28th, the Cooper River Bassmasters will host their Second Annual Bass Tournament Benefitting Toys for Tots.

This year's tournament will be held at the Cypress Gardens Boat Landing (locking through to lake allowed). Registration will begin at 4 am and it'll be game-on from safe-light to 3:00 pm.

The entry fee is $50.00 (60% Payback / 40% Donated to Toys For Tots) per Angler, paying back 1 spot for every 5 boats.

For Big Bass it will be $10.00 (100% Payback - 2 Big Bass 70%/30% Split). Each Angler is also to bring a $10.00 New Unwrapped Toy.

The South Carolina Department Of Natural Resources will also have their Hunting & Fishing Simulator at the Landing from 12:30 to 4:30 for your fun and enjoyment.

The very best part of this tournament is that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the local Toys for Tots program!

Christmas is definitely in the air!

Less than one week until Thanksgiving and the events have already officially started for the Christmas season.

This Sunday will be a special event just for Toys for Tots. It's the 13th Annual Official Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Motorcycle Ride for Low Country Children.

On November 22rd, bikers from throughout the Low Country will come together for the 13th Annual Official Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Motorcycle Ride for Low Country Children. This ride is sponsored by the Law Riders Motorcycle Club, a group of Harley riders who are all public safety (police, fire and EMS) officials.

The ride will begin and end this year at the North Charleston Coliseum, located off Montague Avenue. Registration will begin at 9:00 AM and bikes will roll out at 11:00 AM. If it's raining (and the local stations are calling for rain) the ride will take place on December 6th.

Registration is $15.00 or a new unwrapped toy for the rider and $10.00 or a new unwrapped toy per passenger. All monies and toys go to the Toys for Tots program.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle, music, vendors and breakfast for sale before the ride.

In just a few short weeks, the streets of Charleston will be filled with reindeer, elves, presents, Christmas trees and santas.

And although this may include the holiday decorations, that's not what I'm referring to. It's time again for the Annual Reindeer Run!

This fun run is a jolly jog or jaunt (5K - 3.1 miles) through the streets of downtown Charleston during the holiday season. And it's for reindeer of all fitness levels and ages.

Whether you plan on running or walking the course, be sure to dress in your best holiday costume to win fabulous prizes. The Reindeer Run is for everyone including runners, walkers, dogs, strollers, & scooters.

This year's run will be on December 5th. The starting point is going to be Southend Brewery. The runners will begin at 9:00 am, with the walkers beginning immediately thereafter.

All proceeds from the Reindeer Run benefit MUSC Children's Hospital, one of the most respected pediatric health care centers in the country which treats nearly 50,000 children each year. Throughout the history of the event, the Charitable Society of Charleston (CSC) has donated over $300,000 to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

!!! New this year to the Reindeer Run is the Official After-Party being held at Southend Brewery starting at 11am. Enjoy happy hour prices while you ROCK out like a reindeer with a great local alternative rock band - Category Six!!!

Come celebrate a Lowcountry tradition at Charleston's most beloved nighttime holiday event...the Holiday Festival of Lights! With over 2 million shimmering lights, this three-mile driving tour brings more and more light displays year after year with nearly 600 shining displays this year.

This year the park open up this spectacular event on November 13, 2009 and will continue through January 10, 2010.

The Festival of Lights is much more than just a driving tour! Park the car, stretch your legs, and take in the new and exciting attractions custom-designed for holiday cheer. There are many celebrated attractions to be sure to see and do, including:

Wander over to Winter Wonderland where a traditional 18-animal carousel ride whirls you around and around. Don't miss the 4-by-8 foot holiday card designs created by local school students as part of a holiday art competition. These life-size displays of Christmas themes tower above you and are quite a sight.

Festival Hours are:

Fridays and Saturdays: 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m.
Sundays - Thursdays: 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.

The entrance fees are $10 per vehicle for 1-15 guests, $25 per vehicle for 16-30 guests, or $100 per vehicle for 31 or more guests. Receive a $2.00 discount per vehicle (Monday-Wednesday only) with the donation of a canned food item, which will benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank.

32nd Annual Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble

Do you have plans for Thanksgiving morning already?

Well, if you're not already on cooking duty, then you could get out and run in the 32nd Annual Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble.

This run is hosted by the Knights of Columbus Rev. P.N. Lynch Council #704 and is held every year on Thanksgiving morning. More than 5,000 people participate in the race every year, and thousands of dollars are raised for various local charities.

And you don't have to worry about it interfering with your big meal plans for the day because the race starts at 9 am, leaving you plenty of time to get in all the fixin's!

This year, race week registration and packet pick-up will take place under a tent on Tabacco Road on the northeast side of Marion Square near the Embassy Suites Hotel.

The dates and times for registration and packet pick-up for the 2009 event are:

Monday, November 23 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, November 24 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday, November 25 from 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 26 from 7:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.

(Please note that there will not be any registration or packet pick-up on Sunday, November 22.)

If you need something for your active little ones, there is also a Children's Fun Run for children 10 and under at Marion Square directly after the 5K run.

There will be four different races set for the kids, all depending on age. The times for each individual children's race are:

Under 3 run 25 meters 10:00 a.m.
Ages 4 - 5 run 50 meters 10:05 a.m.
Ages 6 - 7 run 75 meters 10:10 a.m.
Ages 8 - 10 run 100 meters 10:15 a.m.

After you've given it your all in the race, you can relax and mingle at the after-party. The Knights of Columbus will host a post-race party at Marion Square and in the area around the Hall. Food and refreshments will be available, and they will even have Plain Jane there to provide a little post-race, pre-Thanksgiving feast entertainment.

So get out of bed on Thanksgiving morning and head out for a great race for a good cause. An even better way to think about it is that you'll be making room for all the goodies to come that afternoon :)

Support Our Troops on Veteran's Day AND throughout the Year

Veteran's Day is a day to loudly and proudly honor all of those who have bravely served our great country.

This year, while we're remembering all of those who have served in the past, let's also do something to support our current active military.

Don't have any ideas of what you could do? Well, here are just a few to get you started:

Send a letter or care package. There are several websites that you can check out to get you the right information for this. You can check out www.anysoldier.com, www.letterstosoldiers.org, and www.amillionthanks.org.
Donate blood for troops in combat. There are blood banks and blood drives all over the country on an given day. Your blood may stay within your community, or it could be the life-saving nectar for someone protecting your freedom. You can check out www.militaryblood.dod.mil for more info.
Offer up your unused frequent flyer miles at www.homemiles.org. This could not only get a soldier home for a little much needed R & R, but it could save us (taxpayers) a little dough, too.
Volunteer to foster a military personnel's pet through www.netpets.org/militarypet/foster.php. So many of their beloved pet end up in shelters because they are leaving the country and can't take them along. How awesome would it be for them if someone could take care of their pet while they're away, and then when they return, their pet is waiting for them! I'm certain that's one of the best welcome-home gifts -- especially if their animals are their family!
Donate sports equipment, games and more to the troops through www.give2thetroops.org. They do have some down-time, and while it isn't much, I'm sure it would be really nice to get a taste of home by being able to get a flag-football or basketball game going.

And don't forget to say THANK YOU to all past and active military this Veteran's Day (and after)!

Today marks the 234th Birthday of the Unisted States Marine Corps. While it has been over 13 years since I served, I feel that my passion for The Corps grows stronger every day. I still talk to many of the men whom I went to boot camp with back in 1992 and formed lasting friendships with many of the men that I served with thoughout my enlistment. There are countless memories that come from serving our wonderful country; from graduating from Parris Island to serving in Cuba.

Today, I want to wish all the men and women who serve in the Marine Corps a Happy Birthday. May God bless you all.

Christmas Cards for Noah Biorkman

Riding home from the office today I heard about this brave young man who has been battling cancer for over 2 years. The doctors feel that he may not make it to celebrate Christmas, so Noah's family is going to celebrate early this year. Noah's last wish is to collect as many Christmas cards as he can. I check with snopes.com to verify the story and it is true. Here is a photo of Noah and his address. I know that I will have my card in the mail tomorrow. Please pass this on to everyone that you know and lets all make something special happen for Noah.

Christmas will come early for a five year old Michigan boy this year. Noah Biorkman is battling cancer and is not expected to live much longer. Noah is in the last stages of a 2 1/2 year battle with Neuroblastoma cancer.
