Low rates - 12/30/09 11:07 PM
Freddie mac announced that average 30 year mortgage rates inched up above 5% for the week ending 12/24.  Average rates for the US were 5.05, up from 4.91 with points averaging .7  It's still a great time to get a mortgage.  Rates are still well below their highs from June of this years.

Please, don't let Christmas be over - 12/29/09 04:01 PM
I hate to say it, but I think Christmas is over.  Everybody is back to work, the kids are tired of all the gifts they got, the house no longer smells like pine and I'm about 10 pounds heavier.  It takes so long to get ready for Christmas, then boom... it's over.
I have to say that considering we're in a bad economy, I felt like this was one of my families best Christmas's.  I closed 3 escrows in December, gained 5000 points in Bob Stewart's latest A.R. contest, and avoided having my mother-in-law over for for the entire Christmas holiday.  … (7 comments)

Internet advertising - 12/27/09 11:33 PM
One of my weekend rituals is to enjoy a cup of coffee while reading the Sunday newspaper. I use to love reading the real estate sections.  The syndicated articles like "Ask a Professional" and "The Renters Reference".  I enjoyed seeing how my competition was advertising, and getting familiar with new listings.  The local paper is the Press Democrat, and it serves a county of about 400,000 people.  It's a great daily newspaper.  When I got my license in 2002 the real estate sections was about 7 pages long.
This morning I opened the paper, and when I got to the real estate section, I thought 'wow, this … (5 comments)

I said I wanted a Kindle, not a camel ! - 12/26/09 01:26 AM
I hope all my A.R. friends got all the gifts they wanted for the holiday.  About a month ago I told my wife that I was interested in the Amazon Kindle.  I'm not a big reader , but I thought I might read more if it did  not require a trip to the bookstore.  Well this morning, I got up with the kids and opened presents.  Just as I thought we were done, Lynette left the room and came back in with a hugh box.  I unwrapped it, and found a large plastic "Blowmold" camel.  I have a Blowmold nativity scene … (7 comments)

early evening in Santa Rosa - 12/24/09 01:17 PM
I was driving home last night over a road called Fountaingrove Parkway.  It rises about 500 feet above the the floor of Santa Rosa.  Last night was  clear, cold, with a light wind which made for a beautiful shot of Santa Rosa about 45 minutes after the sun went down over the hills.  The Wine Country is a beautiful place to live, day or night!

This photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix L20 on a "night time" setting

Saveyour career from the market SHIFT (warning, some readers may find this photo objectionable!) - 12/24/09 12:22 PM
My kids love our "Blowmold" manger scene.  It would not be Christmas without it.  The kids are always moving the Wisemen around (I only have 2 left because somebody stole one several years ago).
Anyway, some real orthodox Christians might find the below photo a bit objectionable, however, I imagine most Orthodox Christians would find a manger scene made up of plastic people who have light bulbs hanging in their backs, that were purchased at Walmart 15 years ago objectionable.  So here you go...

Shift passes the inspection - 12/24/09 12:33 AM
Looking for something to read during your holiday travels?  Take Shift by Gary Keller.  It's a great read.  Why don't you do something to increase your business, instead of watching the airlines movie... Home Alone 5.   By the way, Shift is TSA  friendly.  Happy Holidays!

If you don't want to risk finding it is sold out at the airport bookstore, you might want to order a copy from Active Rain, by going to: http://giftofshift.com/activerain

What are you asking Santa Clause for this year?  I've got a recommendation for you.

If you were naughty, and Santa does not honor your request, you can buy it through Active Rain by going to: http://giftofshift.com/activerain
This is one of the best books I've read, and I'm sure will be a treasured gift under the tree.

Get on your bikes and ride... - 12/22/09 01:05 PM
Well... not in Santa Rosa, or at least make sure you have a good helmet & insurance policy.
I love living in Santa Rosa, but I have to tell you that it is not the most bicycle friendly city.  If fact, it's pretty dangerous.  I live in an area called Rincon Valley which is about 5 miles east of downtown.  I'd ride my bike to work, but I'd have to ride on a 4 lane highway or over a very steep hill (Fountaingrove parkway) to get there.  On the highway, you risk getting hit by a car, and on Fountaingrove parkway … (1 comments)

Christmas lights in Rincon Valley - 12/20/09 10:35 PM
I love taking my kids out to look at Christmas lights.  They wait in the car while I get out an walk around.  I guess I like it more than they do.  I use to beg my father to take me out out to look at the lights when I was a kid.  Oh well?  Here are my favorites just in case you can't get out tonight...

This is my neighborhood.  Everybody really gets into it, including getting lights up into a 30' pine tree.

Picked up the Shift - 12/19/09 12:15 AM
I picked up my copy of Shift by Gary Keller.  I read bits and pieces of it on the way home, catching quick paragraphes as I waited for the traffic signals to turn green on my way home.  I'll dive into it tonight.  If you're interested, it can be bought at most book stores, or can be bought via active rain at: http://giftofshift.com/activerain

What is Title? - 12/18/09 08:13 AM
I have clients, esp. first time home buyers, who do not understand what Title means.  Title is not a document, but a term that signifies the interest in a piece of property.  Ownership rights pass from one owner to another in a chain of ownership that begins with the very first sale of the property.  This could be hundreds of years ago, or relatively recently for new homes or newly subdivided properties that are being sold for the first time.  You can research county records and see who all the owners have been to any piece of property.
In California, title … (1 comments)

Ben Kenny pushes for a Shift - 12/18/09 01:11 AM
Saw Ben Kenny (of Keller Williams) at Rain Camp San Francisco.  He was talking about the book Shift by Gary Keller.  Sounded like a great read with great ideas.
I got on Barnes and Nobles website and conducted a search for the book, which it carries.  There is a button to the right of the screen that states "find it in a store nearest you".  I clicked it and found it was right here in Santa Rosa.  It's on hold for me to pick up tomorrow.  Hope to have it read by 2010!
If you're interested in learning more or purchasing the book,  go … (0 comments)

Holiday drink - 12/18/09 12:48 AM
I want my blogs to be real estate related, or significant to my area.  I thinks it's weird when agents blog about their family, or news in another part of the country. However... I'm going to make an exception today.  I found a great holiday drink that has been the HIT OF TWO OFFICE PARTIES!!!  The Pomegranate Mojito.
It is so simple to make, tastes great, and is rather unusual.
Here's all you need:
2 cups sugar 1 cup water 40 +/- fresh mint leaves 1 liter club soda 4 cups white rum 2 cups fresh squeezed lime juice 2 cups purchased … (0 comments)

Still a great time to buy a home!

Buddy's Christmas Tree farm - 12/06/09 10:53 AM
I took the family out yesterday to get the family tree.  We have our favorite places, but this this year we decided to drive out to Sebastopol and pick a tree at Buddy's Christmas Tree farm (8575 Graton Road Sebastopol).  The trees were very affordable (under $50) and there were plenty of things for my kids to do as I was paying for the tree, and having it prepared for the drive home.
There are plenty of Christmas tree farms in Sonoma County, so if you live in or near Northern California, I recommend a day spent finding and cutting your … (5 comments)

Santa Rosa's shameful past - 12/03/09 05:22 PM
There is an area in Santa Rosa off Chanate Road clearly marked "Chanate Historic Cemetery".  It has a nice new wooden fence around it, a nice entry plaque, and gravel paths to follow on your self guided tour through the historic cemetery.  Unfortunately this is all new, and until about 5 years ago, the cemetery was covered in heavy brush with no indication of what secrets history held.

Between 1877 and 1944 this beautiful area was used to bury Santa Rosa residents who had no money, no family, or were otherwise not entitledto be buried in one of the city's … (1 comments)

Free money! - 12/01/09 08:55 AM
There are a lot of you who have  money owed to you but the payor can no longer locate you.  Unclaimed money is suppose to be delivered to the state in which you reside, or in some cases, the federal government holds it.
Here is link that you can check to see if the federal government is holding any uncollected money.  It is actually several sites that can be searched from one page. There is only one search that requests a social security number.  The other searches only require a first and last name.   http://nupn.com/federal.htm
I conducted a quick search for myself and my parents and came up with … (3 comments)
