HEAR YE! HEAR YE! The Internal Revenue Service has just published (at long last) the newly revised (and more complicated) Federal Tax Form 5405 which will be used by individuals claiming the $8000 Tax Credit for First-Time Buyers and the $6500 Tax Credit for Long-Time Residents for purchases made after November 6, 2009 (when the extension of the old and the creation of the new was signed into law). You've just closed (or will be closing soon) on the purchase of your new home. You've been told you're eligible* for the new $6500 fully-refundable federal Move-Up Home-Buyer Tax Credit. You've got just one question: When do I get my money? The short answer is: It's up to you! But your available options will be determined by whether the closing date of your purchase is: Between November 7 and December 31, 2009 Or after January 1, 2010. Information regarding Federal Income Tax Form 5405, used to claim the $8000 First-Time Home-Buyer Credit: Changes have been made to the first-time home-buyer credit by the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009, signed into law by President Obama on November 6, 2009. As a result, the 2008 Tax Form 5405 can be used only for homes purchased before November 7, 2009, for which an election is made to claim the credit for 2008.
