Hawaii Has Highest Percentage of Minority Owned Small Businesses - 07/30/10 03:22 PM
According to the U.S. Census Bureau Hawaii boasts the highest percentage of minority owned small businesses in the country. That was a whopping 57 percent as of 2007, which, believe it or not, is the most current data available. D.C. was the next highest with a much lower 40.2 percent and then came California with 35.6 percent.
This shouldn't really surprise local residents, considering what a mix of ethnicities we've always had. Common lineages include Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, and a mix of European along with a bit of Hispanic and African blood. Hawaii Higher than Average on Money Spent Per Student - 07/08/10 02:16 PM
The national average of money spent per pupil per year is $10,259, according to the U.S. Census report on public school funding. The Hawaii public school system spent $11,800 per pupil for the 2007-2008 school year. That's fifteen percent higher than the national average.
It's nice to see that Hawaii's tax dollars are being spent in the right place, and it's even more heartening to see that we're doing a fair percent better than the average.

The Great Makawao Paint-Out Invitational of 2010 is approaching. This is an annual event sponsored by Viewpoints Gallery. Much of the Maui art community looks forward to it every year.
