maui: East Maui Welcomes Roadwork - 05/30/12 11:32 AM
After the severe storms of March, East Maui's roads are in need of substantial repairs, and the Department of Transportation will be working on those from June to December. Keeping the roads safe is not taken lightly by the Maui community or the DOT, so there is a lot of support for this work to keep East Maui infrastructure strong. The project will be paid for by Governor Neil Abercrombie's second supplemental emergency proclamation that was issued in response to the March storms.

Presented by the 2012 Maui Invitational Music Festival the Maui Jazz and Blues Fest will feature various styles of jazz and blues music by popular entertainers from Hawaii and the mainland. The event will take place at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku.

Hawaii culinary artists take their recipes seriously, and their experience is drawn from a colorful fusion of themes from the numerous cultures that call our state home. The result is that there's some incredible food to be had here, and a recent award has validated just that.
The Food Marketing Institute (FMI), based in Arlington, Virginia, recently awarded Keoni Chang with the top title of Grand Chef in their first Supermarket Chef Showdown. Keoni is a Foodland chef, and if you aren't familiar, that's one of Hawaii's primary supermarket chains. We can't say we're surprised.

A Maui hula school (hula halau) ranked in 4th place at the renowned Merrie Monarch Festival this year. It was the only school from Maui to enter the competition, and their placement was a great accomplishment.
This year's was the 49th annual Merrie Monarch Festival, and the young men's group from Halau Kekuaokala'au'ala'iliahi of Wailuku earned their titles for fourth place in both the Kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) hula categories. On Saturday, March 24th, an immense ukulele event will be taking place on the grounds of Kalama Intermediate School in Makawao. Over 200 ukulele players are gathering to creat Ukulele Explosion: Sam's Upcountry Jam and Ukulele Music Festival.
