things to do: Bagpipes and Tom Brokaw - 07/23/11 11:06 PM

Each year about this time, my bagpipe band gets to play for the University of Phoenix Graduation ceremonies. This is one of my favorite gigs, everyone is happy, the audience, graduates and faculty acts like we were rock stars.
As is normal, each year there is a featured commencement speaker, so I am somewhat of a connoissuer of speakers. This year we were lucky to have Tom Brokaw speak. Excellent as you might imagine, having been on TV for so many years. Without a doubt the best I have heard.
Here is a picture of Tom … (3 comments)

The NextGen club of Sun City got off to a great start! I wrote about the first meeting of this club dedicated to the baby boomer generation now moving into Sun City HERE. Attendance was fantastic, with over 100 people attending. All were enthusiastic, the club will be off to a good start.
The next meeting of the NextGen Club will be Thursday, 3/25/2010 at the Fairway Recreation Center at 7:00PM, hope to see you there.

things to do: 5 Great Reasons to Move to Sun City AZ - 10/09/09 09:01 PM
Sun City AZ was Del Webb’s first and premier age qualified community. Mr. Webb envisioned a community dedicated to the wants and needs of persons who were retired, or soon to retire. He knew these buyers were active and wanted to remain so. Sun City was built with a recreation center, (now 7) a golf course, (now 7 + 3 country clubs) and stores all completed by the first day of sales. With the addition of Boswell Hospital, Sun City became a virtually self-sufficient community, unique then and still unique and desirable today. The following are 5 of the many reasons … (0 comments)

things to do: Fall is coming! - 09/26/09 03:04 PM
It is always a big thing in Sun City when Fall comes. Up in the northern areas of the country, you probably mark the day you first see geese heading south. Here in Sun City, we count the first Minnesota license plate sighted. It is a better measure of the season than the weather, which still is in the 100 degree range. The nights are much cooler now, and the days are a little bit shorter.
In spite of the change of season, we have plenty of sunshine for those who would like to come here and get out of the … (1 comments)

things to do: It's Twilight Time! A tribute to the Platters and the 50's - 09/29/08 02:01 PM
Last night, 9/28/08, I attended the Sun City Recreation Association's free concert. How nice to sit under the stars on a warm, balmy night listening to such songs as Only You, Twilight Time, and the unforgettable Unchained Melody as well as many others. (digression, how do grown men sing falsetto? Doesn't it hurt?)
These concerts occur almost every weekend during the fall in Sun City, and are free to RCSC members (all homeowners in Sun City Belong) and their guests.
The October Sun Bowl Concert schedule is:
10/5/08 6:30 p.m. Desert Winds Community Steel Orchestra, Latin, pop, and island tunes.
10/12/08 … (0 comments)

things to do: Tennis Anyone? - 08/09/07 06:42 PM
Suprise Tennis and Racquet Complex:  14469 W Paradise Lane, Surprise AZ
The state of the art Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex had a soft opening on Monday. It features 25 courts, one of which will seat up to 5,000 spectators. The grand opening is scheduled for September 8, 2007. 17 of the courts will be lit for night-time play, something very important in Arizona's heat.
Plans for the use of the complex include lessons and tournaments for the young players, including some smaller courts, up to hopes to get USTA sanctioned and senior matches.
The complex is part of the Surprise Recreation Campus. … (2 comments)

things to do: Cool Places in Arizona, Revisited - 06/05/07 04:35 PM
There are far to many wonderful trips to take in Arizona. The image we have here is that this is a vast desert with nothing but sand and saguaros. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Arizona is a state with life zones from the lower Sonoran desert of the south to near arctic tundra in the north.
I have posted more interesting and beautiful places, all within a couple of hours of Phoenix and the Sun Cities. To view information on these sites, click here. Please keep these places in mind when planning your next trip.

things to do: Cool Places in Arizona - 06/04/07 04:48 PM
During the hot summers, even the crazy "zonies" like me who like hot weather like to get away once in a while. One of my alltime favorite places is Montezuma's Castle.
Montezuma's Castle is slightly more than one hour north of Sun City and Phoenix on I17 in the Verde Valley. It is just a few minutes off of the freeway, accessible to most, with easy trails and great places to take pictures.
Originally built by the Sinagua (Spanish for "without water") indians, the ruins are a 20 room cliff dwelling. The dwelling is high enough to protect the original residents from enemy … (0 comments)
