SHAVE ICE SUNDAY - 01/30/12 02:01 AM

It has become a tradition on Sunday afternoons for my husband and I to visit our favorite shave ice stand in Kihei.   Local Boys South isn't glamerous but it serves up the best (in my opinion) shave ice in the Kihei area.
Most people are now familiar with this wonderful dessert because President Obama always stops into his favorite shave ice stand on Oahu when he visits Hawai'i during the Christmas holidays.  Shave ice has its roots in Japanese tradition and was actually brought to Hawai'i by Japanese workers when they immigrated to Maui.  Many people think of it … (12 comments)

SUNDAY INSPIRATION--COMING TO THE AID OF A FRIEND - 01/29/12 10:45 AM
Okay, maybe this is too cute, corny and the ending is obvious.  However, I opened this video from a friend of mine early this Sunday morning and was moved by how Nature takes care of her own--by the innate desire to help another. Even more so--the ability to stop and figure it out.  Has this gone missing from our society's world, and what can we learn from this simple gesture  . . . . Sorry, I can't embed the video, so please just follow the link:  Turtles.  … (9 comments)

"YOU CAN'T BUILD A REPUTATION ON WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO" - 01/22/12 03:54 AM
"You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do".    --Henry Ford Well, actually that's not true.  You can build a reputation as one who never gets things done, who doesn't return phone calls in a timely matter, who is always late to appointments, who fails to follow up, who is always complaining, who never listens.  You can build a reputation as someone who can't be counted on.  But, of course, that's not what Henry Ford meant.  He built his reputation as a man of action and he revolutionized the auto industry.
After reading this quote I thought … (12 comments)

SWOOP THROUGH YOUR HOUSE TO GET READY FOR A SHOWING - 01/21/12 01:49 AM
Your house is on the market and your Realtor has just called to schedule a showing this afternoon!  What to do with all those odds and ends of things that shouldn't be in your house when it's being shown . . .  Grab a Swoop.  That is this delightful over-grown, pumpkin-looking object in the photo.  It is actually the Swoop Storage Bag and Play Mat-in-One.  Okay, it's clever and cute as a flexible toy bin, but the moment I saw it I thought it was the perfect thing for sellers to use to clear up the last little piles of "stuff" … (20 comments)

MAUI OCEANFRONT MARATHON--JANUARY 22, 2012 - 01/19/12 02:40 AM
The Maui Oceanfront Marathon will be held this Sunday, January 22, 2012.  The Marathon  is a point-to-point race starting in Wailea and traveling along the coast all the way up to Lahaina.  Could you ask for a more beautiful course to run?  Views of the ocean almost the entire way!  I took the photo of part of the race course recently--with the ocean extending all the way to Lanai in the distance.  Since it is prime whale-watching season here, perhaps the whales will join everyone by swimming the course, too.  The race starts at 5:45 a.m. in Wailea on Wailea Iki … (7 comments)

Do you have unwanted TV's, computers or other electronic equipment you don't know what to do with?  You can donate that equipment this Saturday, January 21, 2012, and benefit our community.  The Kihei Sunrise Rotary Club will pick up used electronic equipment to raise money for their club's programs.  If you live in South Maui anywhere between Ma'alaea and Kihei/Wailea, members of the club will be collecting donations between the hours of 8 a.m and noon.  If you have televisions up to 19 inches, keyboards, laptops or a small box of accessories, the club requests a donation of $5 for the … (4 comments)

LET IN THE LIGHT--BARBARA CORCORAN ON STAGING - 01/07/12 02:52 PM
Barbara Corcoran, real estate mogul, business owner and real estate contributor to NBC’s TODAY Show, was interviewed by Lester Holt on the TODAY show this morning in a new series entitled, "Open House".  As Lester says, selling today is, "All about the staging".  Barbara shares six important staging tips in the first part of the video.  But, I really love the second part where she shares some "truths" with Lester. If I had to sum it all up I think this quote by Barbara is just perfect: "Buyers don't give you the courtesy of saying they want new appliances, they simply … (21 comments)

ARE YOU USING "BANISHED" WORDS IN YOUR SALES OR MARKETING? - 01/03/12 09:31 PM
On New Years Day ever since 1976, Lake Superior State University in Michigan has published its "List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness".  During the year people from around the world submit their nominations to the University.  At the end of the year the University compiles the list based on the total number of nominations for each word.  Last year's list included such greats as "BFF", "viral", and "Wow Factor"--none of which I have a problem banishing.  However, this year's list had some of my favorites. Number 1 on the list is "amazing".  Apparently … (90 comments)

Up Your Gratitude: Thank-You Notes Can Have Profound Effects - 01/02/12 09:35 PM
The article with the above title appeared in yesterday's Parade Magazine.  It was written by John Kralik, who also wrote a book entitled, A Simple Act of Gratitude.  The book chronicles his year of writing thank-you notes--a project that "transformed his life".  Here is the link to the  article:  Up Your Gratitude:  Thank-You Notes Can Have Profound Effects. This article touched me in several different ways.  First of all I was having this exact conversation with a friend of mine last week--someone "down on their luck" for the past few years.  I wasn't suggesting to them to start writing out thank-you … (21 comments)

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 01/01/12 02:36 PM
HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!  2012 has arrived and a whole year of possibilities expands before us.  Trying to take this photo was a lot like the events of 2011.  The tide was coming in.  I wrote, "Happy New Year" several times and it was wiped out by the waves before I could even get the camera in hand.  After trying a few different places on the beach I decided I had only enough time to write "Happy 2012" and get a quick photo.  In my 2011 there were a few starts, missteps, trying different things.  Some were wiped off quickly, just … (18 comments)
