activerain: Flexible Design: Under The Sink and In Business - 10/17/10 11:58 PM
Take a look under my kitchen sink and you'll find the basics for cleaning dishes, counters, windows, floors and carpets. It's convenient to have everything in one place. The base of a sink cabinet usually has about six square feet of storage with a lot of dead air space above. By using a flexible, easy-to-assemble (no tools required!) shelving system, I was able to nearly double that in just a few minutes. The added space means better organization, letting me quickly find what I need. No more excuses, no more procrastination because I don't know where something is. It's

activerain: No More AR Flags? ... A New 'Suggest' Button - 06/01/10 01:53 PM
This morning while browsing through ActiveRain posts, I noticed a new button: At the bottom of posts, the Flag option has been removed: With the flag, AR members could 'flag for feature' as well as 'flag for plagiarism.' Now it appears members can Suggest that a post be featured, but there is no way to report plagiarism. Copyright is a hot topic in the Rain, so I hope the AR Team is just improving the way that violations can be noted. My guess is that either Bob Stewart or Brad Andersohn will have a post up shortly about

activerain: RainCamp Las Vegas: Showers In The Forecast - 03/29/10 10:35 AM
I really wish this title wasn't so literal. One of our local weathermen said there is a "disturbance out of the Pacific Northwest" heading our way. Knowing the AR Team, that could mean any number of things. :) Unfortunately that description refers to our weather for RainCamp on April 1. Las Vegas is expected to go from 84 on Tuesday to just 58 on Thursday, with wind and a 50% chance of showers. If you're traveling to Las Vegas, it might be best to bring a light jacket or sweater. For local real estate professionals, RainCamp Las Vegas presents

activerain: How To Highlight Text On Your ActiveRain Blog - 11/01/09 01:02 AM
Have you ever wanted to really emphasize a point in your post and bold or colored text wasn't enough? Here's a quick way to highlight text with just a little HTML code. This is a screenshot of the first and last paragraphs of this post in Draft: Open the post in Edit mode, and click on the HTML tab. Now it will look like this. I've underlined the text I'm going to highlight in red. Place the HTML tag <span style="background-color: yellow;"> at the beginning of the text you want to highlight, and the tag </span> at the end.

activerain: How To Use Your ActiveRain Blog To Enhance Relationships - 10/30/09 10:54 PM
Bob Stewart's latest challenge motivated me to take a closer look at my blog. After 3+ years in the Rain, I've written nearly 900 posts. Many of these simply provided information, market data or opinions. I focused on the 'what' - the content. When I think in terms of relationships instead of content, my focus moves from the 'what' to the 'who'. Who is my target audience? Who will read this, and how will they benefit from it? Here are four examples of how to use your ActiveRain blog to enhance relationships. SHOP LOCAL "Hey, that's the dog that wrote that Internet post

activerain: The View from 500,000 ... Broadening My Horizons - 10/28/09 09:11 PM
Today I passed the 500,000 point milestone on ActiveRain. It's been a journey of a little over three years, nearly 900 posts, 8500 comments, hundreds of photos and neighborhoods added to Localism, and 44 members invited to the Rain. Want to know a secret? It's not about the points, it's about the process. The business rewards are many -- listings sold, buyer transactions closed, a better understanding of my market and community, a network that spans the U.S. and Canada. The personal rewards are far more valuable. I've learned about search engine optimization (SEO), online marketing, how to write better content

activerain: 358 Real Estate Blog Ideas - 10/24/09 11:10 PM
Not sure what to write about on your shiny, new ActiveRain blog? Or maybe you're looking for some fresh content to revitalize a blog that's feeling tired and dull? Tonight I did a Google search for "real estate blog ideas" and the titles from the results on page one totaled 358 ideas (plus "a year's worth", some "internet marketing ideas" and some "brilliant prospecting ideas".) Not only will these posts spark your creativity, they'll also give you some great examples of how people are blogging outside of the Rain. Here they are: 106 Blog Ideas for Real Estate Agents -- by

activerain: Focus Your ActiveRain Reading with Blogs Posted By Key - 10/23/09 02:09 AM
One of the strengths of ActiveRain is the diversity of its membership. While real estate agents make up the bulk of the community, there are also loan officers, inspectors, appraisers, title reps, virtual assistants, home stagers and 21 other categories. We used to be able to select posts from specific job categories, but that functionality has been 'misplaced' in various redesigns and site improvements. Tonight I stumbled upon a 'secret page' that can really help users target their reading -- Blogs Posted By Key. There's no navigation link to this page; the address is http://activerain.com/blogs?posted_by_key. Notice the four drop-down boxes for Category, Posted By, Sort by, and Posted

activerain: Measuring The 'Active' In ActiveRain - 09/18/09 02:09 PM
In my previous post I asked How Active Is ActiveRain? How many members (or what percentage) do you think are consistently contributing to the site? To me the level of member participation and interaction is a significant indicator of the community's overall health. Analytics such as visitors, page views, duration and bounce rate are also important. The ActiveRain Team has designed an ingenious system to measure participation and encourage all of the competitve type-A's in the real estate industry -- points. We get 100 per day just for logging in; 225 per post (limit of 10 per week); and 25 per comment (up

activerain: How Active Is ActiveRain? - 09/16/09 04:25 PM
There is some insightful discussion today in two featured Members Only posts: WHO IS ActiveRain? Will ActiveRain Stats Change Your Reason For Being Here? Looking at the home page right now, ActiveRain has 159,158 members ... but what exactly does that number represent? A key component in the success of any online community is the particpation and interaction of its members. Trying to quantify that can be difficult. Is it site traffic? Volume of posts and comments? Number of daily log-ins? So here's my question to the members: How Active is ActiveRain? How many members (or what percentage) do you think are consistently contributing

activerain: ActiveRain In Black And White - 09/12/09 03:08 PM
Today while I was editing a table for a market report, I noticed that all of the color is gone. Data that used to look like this: now looks like this: What's strange is that when I edit the table, the color is visible. But when it's published, the table reverts to black and white. Has anyone else experienced changes like this? It's possible that the AR Team made changes that no longer support the HTML attribute bgcolor. One possible workaround is to use the CSS style "background-color". I need to redesign these reports to be tableless

activerain: New Look for the Rain? - 06/27/09 11:16 PM
Have you noticed the new design on the login page for ActiveRain? The color scheme is slightly different; a few clouds have been added; navigation is in a menu form rather than text links; the buttons are rounded instead of rectangular; and the Business Builder categories are much more prominent. I'm curious to see how these design changes will be applied to other pages within the site. What do you think of the new look?

activerain: ActiveRain Reaches 150,000 Members - 06/20/09 12:39 PM
On June 19, 2009 the ActiveRain Real Estate Network reached the 150,000 member mark. Congratulations to Jonathan Washburn, Bob Stewart, Matt Heaton, and the entire ActiveRain Team on this monumental accomplishment! Your vision, passion and dedication to building this extraordinary real estate community are unparalleled. Founded in 2006, it was less than a year ago, on July 25, 2008 that ActiveRain passed 100,000 members. Since then, the network has rocketed to 150,000 in under 11 months, an annual growth rate of over 50% and an average of over 4,500 new members per month. I'm sure the AR Team has several plans in the works to

activerain: Todd Clark Becomes Top Rainer - 04/29/09 03:22 PM
Congratulations to Todd Clark. Beaverton Oregon Real Estate Expert, for moving into the #1 position for total points on ActiveRain earlier today. Todd takes over the top slot from Lenn Harley, who is best known for her Hard Core Real Estate Talk and comprehensive Localism content. Lenn held the lead position for over a year. Todd and Lenn have both contributed so much to ActiveRain through their blogs and comments; their real estate knowledge and client advocacy; their willingness to share and teach; and their strong spirit for our online community. Their leadership, wisdom, and inspiration are invaluable. Katerina Gasset recently published an insightful

activerain: Should ActiveRain Ban Profanity? - 04/12/09 04:45 PM
Maybe I've just been catching ActiveRain at the 'right' time lately, but it seems that there is more and more profanity creeping into posts and comments. Initially I thought this would be addressed by AR's Terms of Service or the Guidelines. Seeing no mention there, I reasoned that maybe the AR Team considered this a free speech issue because this site is essentially a public forum. Exactly how big of an issue is this on ActiveRain? Do a search for any common obscenity and you may be suprised at the results. While a majority of theseĀ are found in non-member comments, there

Today, July 25, 2008, the ActiveRain Real Estate Network reaches a milestone -- 100,000 members! In just over two years, ActiveRain has grown from an idea in Bellevue, WA to an amazing and vibrant online community of real estate agents, lenders, stagers, home inspectors, virtual assistants and others connected with the real estate industry.
