chapel hill: Carolina North Meeting Filled with Tension - 01/24/09 08:26 AM
This past Wednesday, the Chapel Hill Town Council members and members of the UNC-Chapel Hill's Board of Trustees disagreed over what should be done with the remaining 750 acres of the 1,000 acre Carolina North site.  UNC plans to build an academic and research campus on 250 acres of the site, but would not agree to permanently preserve the remaining 750 acres of land as many on the Town Council want.
I live across the street from this tract of land.  It is a very beautiful piece of property with wonderful walking, mountain biking and running trails.  It is actually more property … (2 comments)

chapel hill: Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow -- In Chapel Hill, NC - 01/20/09 10:16 AM
A client recently asked me if there would be snow when they come to town at the end of January.  My response was, "Snow, what is snow?" Well, today we certainly have snow and it is beautiful.
We have not had a good snow in Chapel hill, North Carolina in 4 years. I wanted to show you how much has accumulated so far. This is good for us. Take a look at the table on our deck. I also wanted you to catch a glimpse of the veiw out my front and back doors.
The kids are going to … (3 comments)

chapel hill: Changes Possible to Triangle Area Light Rail Plans - 12/08/08 10:54 AM
Officials are now thinking a future rail-based transit system in the Triangle can use lightweight coaches and engines over its entire 56-mile length, rather than the heavyweight units they once envisioned. The potential change in approach comes after managers of the N.C. Railroad Co. signaled last month that they believe the region's main east-west rail corridor is wide enough to support a stop-and-go light-rail system for local traffic and heavier commuter trains for people arriving here from places as far afield as Greensboro and Goldsboro. Light and heavier rail would share the corridor with the Norfolk Southern and CSX freight trains … (1 comments)

chapel hill: Proposed $650 Million Improvement to North Carolina Commuter Train Service - 11/20/08 09:49 AM
The Triangle area of North Carolina has long awaited progress on a commuter train service and the following article from The Daily Tarheel details positive steps toward that end for the Triangle and the State.
State and local officials are preparing to expand North Carolina's commuter railroad service to support a growing population and boost economic development.  "Rail is a tool. It's not the panacea, its not the do-all end-all, but it's crucial to our sustained economic development," said Patrick Simmons, director of the N.C. Department of Transportation Rail Division.  The N.C. Railroad Company released an 11-month study in early October … (1 comments)

chapel hill: North Carolina's Governor Signs 3 Foreclosure Bills - 09/23/08 08:22 AM
In light of recent soaring foreclosure filings in North Carolina - 24% from June 2008 and 125% from July, 2007 - Governor Mike Easley signed a bill to offer relief to homeowners and banks alike. The North Carolina Foreclosure Prevention Project requires that both homeowners and the state's bank commissioner must receive 45 days notice before a foreclosure is filed and also allows the bank commissioner to extend any foreclosure filing notice by 30 days.  During this time, the state would negotiate with the homeowner and mortgage holder on their loan interest rate and payments. Easley estimates that that the law could help … (2 comments)

chapel hill: Are You Looking For A Language Immersion Program For Your Child? - 09/12/08 06:21 PM
The Chapel Hill Carrboro School System has an incredible Dual Language, or Language Immersion, program for both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.  The program began in 2002.  My daughter started in the Spanish Program in Kindergarten and she just entered Middle School and is in the first Middle School Dual Language Program.  It is very cool to have a 10 year old that is bilingual, especially since she comes from a family where her parents are not fluent in another language.  It is the goal of this program that the children be both bilingual and biliterate.  It is also an incredible learning … (0 comments)
