durham: Changes Possible to Triangle Area Light Rail Plans - 12/08/08 10:54 AM
Officials are now thinking a future rail-based transit system in the Triangle can use lightweight coaches and engines over its entire 56-mile length, rather than the heavyweight units they once envisioned. The potential change in approach comes after managers of the N.C. Railroad Co. signaled last month that they believe the region's main east-west rail corridor is wide enough to support a stop-and-go light-rail system for local traffic and heavier commuter trains for people arriving here from places as far afield as Greensboro and Goldsboro. Light and heavier rail would share the corridor with the Norfolk Southern and CSX freight trains

In light of recent soaring foreclosure filings in North Carolina - 24% from June 2008 and 125% from July, 2007 - Governor Mike Easley signed a bill to offer relief to homeowners and banks alike. The North Carolina Foreclosure Prevention Project requires that both homeowners and the state's bank commissioner must receive 45 days notice before a foreclosure is filed and also allows the bank commissioner to extend any foreclosure filing notice by 30 days. During this time, the state would negotiate with the homeowner and mortgage holder on their loan interest rate and payments. Easley estimates that that the law could help

durham: Thinking of Stucco? - 08/20/08 01:08 PM
In North Carolina, sellers are required to disclose if a house's exterior is actually artificial stucco-EIFS Stucco-instead of concrete stucco. EIFS is basically a form of styrofoam placed on the outside of the house with a "stucco" look-alike finish on the surface. While a house with EIFS can absorb the inevitable settling of the house over time without cracking, it does come with other hazards. Unfortunately, EIFS stucco applied on a wood-framed home (especially if not applied properly) tends to hold moisture inside the walls, which can cause the houses wood and frames to rot.
