I just received a video from an SEO company that said Google has changed its algorithim with respect to links from social networking sites.  It sounds like for those people that are only using social networking sites and directories as a way to get inbound links, they may have problems.  It also sounds like it is going to be more and more important to be blogging and developing new and different high quality link building strategies.  If this is true, I am not surprised.  We know we need to shoot for quality links over quantity.
