ocala: What happened to the Ocala real estate market? - 10/24/07 07:17 AM
What happened to Ocala's red hot real estate market? Well in many ways we have returned to normal. For a couple of years Ocala was one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. We are now experiencing a much needed correction. The reason for this real estate frenzy was two fold. Ocala was and still is the lowest priced city in Florida to buy a home. Additionally Ocala had and still has a lot of empty space. There are literally thousands on vacant house lots and large tracts of develop-able land. All this open space and low prices attracted big

ocala: Ocala weather report for October 2007 - 10/16/07 02:25 PM
Well October isn't exactly fall here in Ocala Florida. We do however begin to cool down. The day time temperatures are now in the mid 80's and the nights in the 60's. Later in the month we can leave our doors and windows open for fresh air and to escape the cost of running the central air. Once again we seem to have had a year without a single hurricane here in Florida. Despite a tremendous amount of gloom and doom predictions early in the year by experts who always seem to be wrong. Of course Ocala has never actually

ocala: Ocala weather report for September 2007 - 09/13/07 07:12 AM
As you may know if you're read my previous weather posts, I don't actually predict the weather. After all no one gets paid so much to be wrong so often as a weatherman. Instead I give folks thinking about relocating to Ocala Florida a general idea of what the weather is like month to month. In September the major thing dominating the weatherr is if Florida will get hit by a hurricane or not. This is the height of hurricane season and although Ocala has never suffered a direct hit we are never the less concerned. We do get tropical storms

ocala: Ocala has not just one but two magazines! - 08/27/07 11:05 AM
A great way to get to know any area before moving there is to read the local newspaper or see if the city of your choice has a magazine. Ocala has two magazines, Ocala Style and Ocala Magazine. Both are surprisingly sophisticated for a small city like Ocala with only 45,000 people. They more on par with what you might expect from a city like Boston, where I once went to college. Ocala Magazine and Ocala Style are fairly interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. They both feature a large glossy format with fantastic photography, tons of beautifully done ads but a

ocala: Rolling Hills roads to get paved. - 07/25/07 06:04 PM
As you may or may not know most of the roads in the Rolling Hills sub division, just west of Ocala , are either limerock or just dirt. Limeroch basically being a very hard packed dirt road. Well I heard rumors of a paving project so I contacted the Marion County commisioners office. I 've just decided to paste the responce I got via email below. There is no better information than from the horses mouth, so to speak. Good Morning The roads proposed for improvement through a road assessment program are: SW 129th Terrace, SW 61st Avenue, and SW 114th Ct.,

ocala: Ocala Marion County Florida School Report Card - 07/23/07 02:33 PM
Once a year the state of Florida issues a report on it's school systems. Just like being in school they are graded from A to F on various testing criteria. Each school is individually rated so you can see the grammar, middle or high school of your choice and how it's ranked. This report is for the latest 2006/2007 school year and covers every school in the Ocala and Marion County Florida area. 2006/07 Ocala Marion County School Report Card

ocala: The Ocala International Airport - 05/29/07 04:54 PM
It may be hard to believe but Ocala does have an airport. The Ocala International Airport to be exact. Now we don't actually have major airlines. Scheduled air service was discontinued in the early 1980's after Eastern and Allegheny Commuter Airlines terminated their operations here in Ocala. With competing airports like Orlando and Tampa and to a lesser extent Gainesville, the likelihood of scheduled air carrier service returning to Ocala is unlikely. The Ocala airport is currently a general aviation facility, designed to accommodate air cargo and other large non-scheduled aviation activities such as private planes and corporate jets. On an odd note, buyers at the

ocala: Historic Down Town Ocala Florida - 05/01/07 03:24 PM
Ocala is one of the few cities that I've seen since I moved to Florida that actually has a formal down town complete with a town common. Now I'm from New England where every small town has a common. Town commons date back to colonial times and were intended to give people a place to graze their cow or horse. What's so nice about town commons is that now a days they serve as a small public park like area in the center of town. Most towns and cities in Florida, in my look like one no stop strip mall,

ocala: Ocala Florida Weather for April 2007 - 04/03/07 03:28 PM
This is for all those people up there in the Great White North waiting for spring. The only help that I can offer is MOVE to OCALA FLORIDA !! As I sit here writing my blog in my shorts and bare feet it's 86 degrees. Now that is unseasonably warm for this time of year but who cares. It sure beats the hell out of snow and ice. Wouldn't you rather be sitting here, with the doors open, enjoying the warm weather than freezing wherever you are up north? Why not move to Ocala Florida. We have the 2nd lowest
