ocala florida: Do you look forward to winter? - 10/13/08 09:22 AM
Here in Ocala Florida we really do look forward to winter. Today is October 13, the beginning of the dry season. Hurricane season ends in late October and the dry season begins about the same time. The dry season will last until mid May with low humidity and not much rain. Winter in Ocala means that it will be in the high 60's to mid 70's during the day and in the 40's or 50's at night. We occasionally get a light frost. If you don't look forward to winter you should just pick up and move to Ocala.

ocala florida: What happened to the Ocala real estate market? - 10/24/07 07:17 AM
What happened to Ocala's red hot real estate market? Well in many ways we have returned to normal. For a couple of years Ocala was one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. We are now experiencing a much needed correction. The reason for this real estate frenzy was two fold. Ocala was and still is the lowest priced city in Florida to buy a home. Additionally Ocala had and still has a lot of empty space. There are literally thousands on vacant house lots and large tracts of develop-able land. All this open space and low prices attracted big

ocala florida: Ocala weather report for October 2007 - 10/16/07 02:25 PM
Well October isn't exactly fall here in Ocala Florida. We do however begin to cool down. The day time temperatures are now in the mid 80's and the nights in the 60's. Later in the month we can leave our doors and windows open for fresh air and to escape the cost of running the central air. Once again we seem to have had a year without a single hurricane here in Florida. Despite a tremendous amount of gloom and doom predictions early in the year by experts who always seem to be wrong. Of course Ocala has never actually

ocala florida: Ocala weather report for September 2007 - 09/13/07 07:12 AM
As you may know if you're read my previous weather posts, I don't actually predict the weather. After all no one gets paid so much to be wrong so often as a weatherman. Instead I give folks thinking about relocating to Ocala Florida a general idea of what the weather is like month to month. In September the major thing dominating the weatherr is if Florida will get hit by a hurricane or not. This is the height of hurricane season and although Ocala has never suffered a direct hit we are never the less concerned. We do get tropical storms

ocala florida: Ocala has not just one but two magazines! - 08/27/07 11:05 AM
A great way to get to know any area before moving there is to read the local newspaper or see if the city of your choice has a magazine. Ocala has two magazines, Ocala Style and Ocala Magazine. Both are surprisingly sophisticated for a small city like Ocala with only 45,000 people. They more on par with what you might expect from a city like Boston, where I once went to college. Ocala Magazine and Ocala Style are fairly interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. They both feature a large glossy format with fantastic photography, tons of beautifully done ads but a

ocala florida: Ocala Real Estate Advise for Sellers ........Try Thinking Like a Buyer. - 06/29/07 03:43 PM
If you're having trouble selling your home here in Ocala try thinking like a buyer. By stopping for a minute and putting yourself in the buyers shoes you might get a better perspective on how to sell your house. You are now a sales person. Just like the owner of a store you are in competition for the public's business. You have to offer the best product at the best price. We're all used to being the consumer. We all want to find a great deal. It's the American way, the home of Walmart. If you have a home to sell in today's market

ocala florida: The Ocala International Airport - 05/29/07 04:54 PM
It may be hard to believe but Ocala does have an airport. The Ocala International Airport to be exact. Now we don't actually have major airlines. Scheduled air service was discontinued in the early 1980's after Eastern and Allegheny Commuter Airlines terminated their operations here in Ocala. With competing airports like Orlando and Tampa and to a lesser extent Gainesville, the likelihood of scheduled air carrier service returning to Ocala is unlikely. The Ocala airport is currently a general aviation facility, designed to accommodate air cargo and other large non-scheduled aviation activities such as private planes and corporate jets. On an odd note, buyers at the

ocala florida: Historic Down Town Ocala Florida - 05/01/07 03:24 PM
Ocala is one of the few cities that I've seen since I moved to Florida that actually has a formal down town complete with a town common. Now I'm from New England where every small town has a common. Town commons date back to colonial times and were intended to give people a place to graze their cow or horse. What's so nice about town commons is that now a days they serve as a small public park like area in the center of town. Most towns and cities in Florida, in my look like one no stop strip mall,

ocala florida: Ocala Florida Weather for April 2007 - 04/03/07 03:28 PM
This is for all those people up there in the Great White North waiting for spring. The only help that I can offer is MOVE to OCALA FLORIDA !! As I sit here writing my blog in my shorts and bare feet it's 86 degrees. Now that is unseasonably warm for this time of year but who cares. It sure beats the hell out of snow and ice. Wouldn't you rather be sitting here, with the doors open, enjoying the warm weather than freezing wherever you are up north? Why not move to Ocala Florida. We have the 2nd lowest

ocala florida: Marion Oaks to Get Sidewalks - 03/30/07 06:11 PM
Marion Oaks was built without sidewalks and that over sight will be rectified in the not so distant future. The original developer laid out wide 2 lane boulevards with tree studded grassy meridian dividers but didn't install either sidewalks or many street lights. A recent article in The Ocala Star Banner goes into great detail but I will attempt to summarize for this report. It seems that money intended for sidewalks to link West Port High School and the sports complex was not needed due to lack of foot traffic. It was some of that money that has been obtained for the Marion Oaks

ocala florida: Almost Everything You Wanted to Know About Florida Termites - 02/23/07 04:02 PM
Its termite swarm season again. Termites cause $700,000,000.00 in damage each year here in Florida. Despite this scary statistic about half the homes in Florida have no form of protection. I'm one of the unprocted myself. I'm from New England and just don't worry about termites or poisonous snakes for that matter. There are 2 types of termites, subterranean and dry wood. The subterranean variety is considered the worst because they have much larger colonies and thus eat more wood. Obvious from the name they live in the ground and prefer moist conditions and wood. The subterranean termites enter your house
