Butchertown has some of the oldest surviving structures in Louisville with its first house dating back to the 1780’s. Many of the 19th century homes and buildings can still be found intact in the area. The neighborhood was hard hit by the 1937 flood which led to the construction of a floodwall that can still be seen running down the middle of some streets today. Butchertown gets its name from the large meatpacking plants that moved into the area at the end of the nineteenth century.
