Kilgore House and Garden Tour 2012

The Kilgore House & Garden 2012 Tour is just around the corner! The Tour kicks off on May 19th and runs through May 20th. This is Louisville's premier garden tour and displays beautiful, lush gardens at selected properties, as well as showcasing beautiful homes at two locations.

Started eleven years ago, The Kilgore House & Garden Tour has hosted thousands of guests over the years, visiting sixty of Louisville's finest gardens. In addition, tourees are treated to view landmark homes in the Louisville area and buy their favorite plants at the Tour's plant sale.

Money raised from this event benefit the Kilgore Samaritan Counseling Center, which provides mental health and counseling services to those who have limited resources to these essential services. Over the past eleven years, the Tour has raised $127,000 through tickets sales, raffle ticket sales, plant sales and sponsorships.

This year's Tour features five gorgeous gardens and two distinguished Louisville-area homes. Additionally, attendees are treated to discounts at two Louisville restaurants, Martini Italian Bistro and Mitchell's Fish House, plus out of town guests will receive a discount at the Hilton Garden Inn Louisville Northeast.

The Kentucky Humane Society's Waggin' Trail Walk for the Animals

On Saturday, June 2nd, the Kentucky Humane Society will host their Waggin' Trail 5K at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. This event celebrates the human-animal bond and helps raise money for the animals the are at the Kentucky Humane Society. Attendees are invited to run a 5K or enjoy a 1 mile leisurely walk while scoping out family-friendly and pet-friendly activities, such as adoptable pets, behavior and agility demos, contests and much more!

In addition, with the help of sponsor Science Hill Diet, there will be an "Adoption Option" pet parade which will include several Kentucky Humane Society pets that are looking for their "forever home". Those who find their pet soul-mate at the event will also be given a free bag of Hill's Science Diet! New to the event this year is the Shelter Dog DNA booth which will conduct on-site pet DNA testing! And as always, there will be an option to have your pooch micro-chipped at a low cost - this is especially beneficial if your animal was to get lost.

The registration fee for the Waggin' Trail is $25, plus fund-raising and includes an event t-shirt! All of the money that is raised goes directly to the Kentucky Humane Society's proactive adoption, education, and spay/neuter programs.

The Barnstable Brown Party is held on the Friday night before the Kentucky Derby - May 4th, this year - and draws celebrities from all areas of entertainment! The Crescent Hill Neighborhood is a popular area in Louisville due to it's vintage charm and community feeling. Originally called the Louisville-Lexington Turnpike, Frankfort Avenue is at the center of Crescent Hill, lined with trendy restaurants and local shops.

Fun at Thunder Over Louisville

On April 21st of this year, Thunder Over Louisville will be held at Waterfront Park in Downtown Louisville. This enormous fireworks display is one of the largest in North America and attracts several hundred thousand people every year! The event lasts all day and includes an air show followed by fireworks synchronized with music.

Thunder Over Louisville began in 1990 at Cardinal Stadium to kick off the Derby season. As the crowd of people grew every year, the event was moved to Waterfront Park to accommodate the large crowds. With the move came the addition of the airshow in 1992, featuring aircrafts such as the Stealth Bomber and Fighter, as well as the Apache Attack Helicopter. Thunder is typically scheduled to be broadcast on local television and in since 2007 the broadcast has been completely in HD.

Old Louisville

Old Louisville is a part of the city that doesn't receive as much attention as the Highlands, but is similar in that it is a quaint part of Louisville that offers a lot of history. It has yo-yo'd from an area where only the wealthiest in Louisville could live, to a period of decline and now into an up and coming area.

Contrary to the name, Old Louisville is actually not the oldest part of Louisville at all! The area wasn't even developed until about a century about Louisville was founded and was where country estates and mansions were built for wealthy Louisvillians. Unfortunately, the area began to decline as new areas were developed such as Cherokee Triangle. Additionally, after the Ohio River Flood of 1937 many residents chose to move above the flood plain to higher ground.

As the Great Depression began to take it's toll many residents were unable to maintain their large mansions and many began to be converted to inexpensive apartments. This caused Old Louisville to shift from an affluent suburb to a low-rent area. Thankfully though, in 1960 a local newspaper writer began actively campaigning to revitalize the depressed area. The area quickly began to see improvement with the median home values doubling between 1990 and 2000.

Today, Old Louisville is the largest preservation district district featuring mostly Victorian architecture. It hosts the world famous St. James Court Art Show every year and serves as the home of the University of Louisville.

The Revitalization of Downtown Louisville

Anchorage Blooms Into Spring

Anchorage is a suburb of Louisville that has become extremely popular as Louisvillians move further and further East, encroaching on Shelbyville. Urban Bourbon Exhibit Outlines Kentucky's Tie To Bourbon

With the spring weather moving into the region in and around Louisville there is a feeling of excitement in the air as Louisvillians look forward to the first Saturday in May - the Kentucky Derby. There is also a new exhibit at The Kentucky Derby Museum that is putting people in a Derby state of mind. It is called the Urban Bourbon Exhibit and features a history on the link between Kentucky and the Bourbon Industry.

Those that grew up in Kentucky know about Kentucky's history of producing Bourbon, but some might still wonder how Louisville became one of the major centers of the Bourbon trade in the 1800s. Most of the distilleries were and still are in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, close to Lexington and Bardstown, but Louisville became the main city for exporting the Bourbon that these distilleries produced. Using the Ohio River and railroads for distributing Bourbon to the rest of the country, this became the staple liquor in many places but still stayed close to Kentuckians hearts as well.

Today, Bourbon goes hand in hand with horseracing and is the main ingredient in the Derby's staple drink - The Mint Julep. The Urban Bourbon Exhibit is running from March 5, 2012-December 31, 2012 and is included with a general admission ticket into the museum.

The Highlands - An Ecclectic Part of The Derby City.

The Highlands is a part of Louisville, KY that includes many bars, restaurants, coffee shops and local businesses. Bridging the gap between Downtown Louisville and the suburbs, the Highlands provide a taste of what big city life is like. Residents are able to walk many places to dine and shop as well as enjoy Cherokee Park which offers a 2.5 mile loop that nature lovers can walk, run or bike around.

The Highands was the last area near downtown to be urbanized and a playground for the wealthy until around 1960 when families began moving to the modern suburbs of Louisville. Today, Bardstown Rd. and Baxter Ave. has the highest density of bars and restaurants in Louisville. The Forecastle Festival - 10th Anniversary

The 10th annual Forecastle Festival is still months away, but the recently released lineup is causing quite the buzz around Louisville. For those unfamiliar with what The Forecastle Festival is, it is a three day concert and according to it's website "where the world gathers to experience the best in Music, Art and Activisim". The 2012 schedule of artists include local music idol, My Morning Jacket, as well as national acts such as, Bassnectar, Girl Talk, Walk the Moon and Ben Sollee, as well as countless other artists.

The word Forecastle is defined as a superstructure at the bow of a ship where the crew is housed. Hard at work in the unruly sea, a place workers gather to unwind after a hard day of labor. A place where the people come together. From this word came a now national recognized music festival that originated in 2002 in Louisville's Tyler Park area. As the festival steadily grew to include major touring acts, such as The Flaming Lips, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Black Keys and The Black Crowes, the venue was moved to Cherokee Park. There had to be several more moves made due to the increasing expansion of the festival. These moves included venues such as The Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center, the Belvedere and finally Louisville Waterfront Park.

In additional to the concerts that are enjoyed at Forecastle, there are also regional artists that are featured in catergories such as 2-D, 3-D and mixed media. Activism is a large part of what Forecastle stands for as well. Forecastle has exhibited over 150 environmental non-profits and outdoor recreational organizations. Most recently in November 2011, Forecastle announced the development of international non-profit environmental foundation called "The Forecastle Foundation".

Locust Grove - Louisville History Preserved

Locust Grove is a national historic landmark located only 6 miles from downtown Louisville. This beautifully preserved 694 acre farm has been around since 1790. Originally, this scenic property was owned by William Croghan, who happened to be the surveying partner to George Rogers Clark, the founder of Louisville.

The Art Sparks Family Studio is an interactive program offered by The Speed Museum. This Louisville, KY exhibit was inspired by the Sacred Air, Breath of Life: Selections for the Native American Collection. There is no registration needed, as this is a drop in studio.

This unique gallery is open on Saturdays from 12pm to 3pm. Emily Forrester will be hosting this event that caters to children age 5 and up that are accompanied by an adult. Your child’s creativity will be encouraged, as Emily guides them in designing their own unique Native American breastplate from beads and fibers.

All the materials needed for your children’s artistic project will be supplied. This wonderful Speed Art Museum activity requires no additional fee’s other than standard admission. This is a great way for families to learn about another culture, while stimulating some inner creativity.

Bardstown Road Aglow in the Highlands

Also, the Winston’s Holiday Van will be picking up visitors that park at Winston’s Restaurant at Sullivan University.

Visit with Santa and his elves at Bearnos Restaurant at 6 PM – he’ll be arriving in style in the 21C Museum Hotel Red Glitter Limo! Also, the 3rd Annual Highlands Beer Festival will be happening at Mid City Mall at 5 PM, with 150 beers from all over the world for only $1 per 2 oz. sample.
