Some Recent Franklin County Numbers - 04/30/07 09:48 AM

I'm not big on using numbers that describe anything bigger than a neighborhood, but if you're considering moving to Columbus or Central Ohio in General, this may be somewhat useful information.

Hippety Hoppity -- Grandview Art Hop Kicks off Saturday - 04/26/07 11:20 AM
A Hop by any other name . . . . The Short North has had the Gallery Hop for something like 21 years now and other cities, regionally, call similar events by the same name - Gallery Hop.  Cincinnati and Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky all have Gallery Hops.  Ten years ago, the Short North Business Association registered the name with the State and they recently asked Grandview Heights not to use the term Gallery Hop to describe their event.
So now, on the LAST Saturday of the month, Along Grandview Avenue between 1st and 5th Avenues, 20 businesses and seven galleries will … (0 comments)

Ride a Bike to Your Favorite Downtown Columbus Summer Festival - 04/23/07 02:33 PM
Mayor Mike is up to his old green ways again while he promotes his GREEN campaign by promoting the bicycle-friendliness of Columbus' major festivals.  Did you know that Columbus has 58 miles of fitness and bike trails (though for the life of me, I can't find an online map detailing them).  The bike corral idea seemed to work well at Goodale Park for Earth Day over the weekend and we're also talking about the Columbus Arts Festival on June 7-10 on the downtown riverfront; the Rose Festival on June 9 and 10 at the Whetstone Park of Roses; Festival Latino on June 15 and … (2 comments)

Throw Away Your Furniture - 04/23/07 10:57 AM
Or at least pretend you threw it away while you're looking for your next home.  Your current furniture simply can't be a deciding factor in the search for your new home.
Your family room furniture is modern so you can't look at a traditional home?  If you keep this mindset, you miss out on much of the active market and, quite possibly, a home you'd really like.Disregard the size of your bedroom furniture or at least think about it in a different way-maybe you won't miss the 2nd night stand or you can put the armoire in the family room now that … (6 comments)

Is Central Ohio "Bubble-Proof"? - 04/19/07 03:07 PM
On my "Real" blog, I'm switching formats and going to a WordPress platform and getting away from my more website-like blog.  It's a slow process but while I'm switching I thought I'd post some of my archived postings from months and years past that may be helpful or at least information. This is one of those posts . . . .
I go on about it all the time since I'm often asked about the perceived real estate bubble. Others hear warnings like I heard this morning on the radio -- the price of a Manhattan property has gone done 30% in the … (0 comments)

I find myself telling buyer clients, usually without their asking me, that maybe they could put a 1/2 bath here or there when we are looking at a home they really like that only has one bathroom. In the Older Columbus Neighborhoods … (3 comments)

Buying a Home in a new Subdivision - 04/19/07 02:21 PM
Lots of buyers in the Columbus Area like new homes. God knows there are enough builders out there all chasing new home buyers. The caveat though, is that buyers don't always like new home subdivisions. If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say something like, "We want a newer home but we don't want a neighborhood where the houses all look the same and there are no trees to speak of."  And then there is always the question of quality. Buyers want a quality home and, as with everything else, I usually tell them you get what you pay … (0 comments)

Franklinton Condo Project to finally happen? - 04/16/07 04:09 PM

It seems a long, long time ago that we first heard about it, but City officials announced a $23 million plan last Friday to turn two former industrial sites and a vacant lot in Franklinton into condominiums, apartments and artists' studios.
Mayor Coleman said the privately funded development will transform the long-troubled area west of Downtown into "the comeback neighborhood" of Columbus. Isn't that nice?  Just like that, Franklinton becomes the "comeback neighborhood" of Columbus.  I thought the Mayor's office was comitted to Bronzeville becoming the comeback neighborhood.  Wait, maybe that was the southside via Parsons avenue. No, no, Weinland Park is … (0 comments)

WCBE 90.5 FM - The Country's Best Radio Station - 04/11/07 02:42 PM
I rarely post anything off topic on my blog but I just had one of those moments that made me think about how much I really, really love this station and how lucky we are in Columbus to have it.
In addition to all the Public Radio staples that I can't get enough of, like Fresh Air, Morning Edition, Marketplace, All Things Considered, and Car Talk, WCBE has locally programmed music from about 9-3 each weekday. That's what makes it special and that's why I'm calling them out. My radio dial, for about the last ten years now, never leaves the … (0 comments)

The virtual pedometer (or) How many Calories can I Burn if I Walk to get Ice Cream? - 04/05/07 02:59 PM
This is a great little hackthat uses Google's superb mapping application to help record distances traveled during a running or walking workout.  Simpler still, if there is a route you usually take to walk the dog and you've always wondered how far you travel each night, you can map it out.  How far is the walk to the library?  What if you walked to work, how far is it and (if you turn on the calorie burning calculator) how many calories will you shed if you walked?
People often marvel at the thought of our family walking to the North Market from … (3 comments)

MLS Numbers Unmasked - What's it all mean? - 04/03/07 03:45 PM
I entered a listing into the MLS today and saw that it was number 2715344.
The 27 means it is a listing that originated in the year 2007.
The 15344 means it is the Fifteen Thousandth, three hundred and forty-fourth house that has come on the market this year. Yowza!  We are up to 15,000 new listings just as April kicks off.
In contrast, the Columbus MLS from the Columbus Board of Realtors tells us that 4993 properties have sold in Central Ohio since January 1, 2007.  In essence, then, for every four homes on the market, one has sold. (Though … (0 comments)

Monday Moring Rant -- Gators Go Home - 04/02/07 12:37 PM
Columbus Ohio is all about The Ohio State University.
This city eats and sleeps all things Buckeye Nation.  It's really an unbelievable accomplishment to make it to both the NCAA Division I football AND basketball championship games in the same year. And then, to play the same team in two different sports? Incredible. Go Bucks! Let's hope tonight's outcome is far different than the BCS championship and far different than the last time these two basketball teams met in December--one of only three losses incurred by the Buckeye's mens team.
