The Arvada Kite Festival is something I look forward every year, but I missed it last year. There's always so much going on around here!
There was not much wind to speak of for the 2009 Kite Festival, but right now the wind is blowing like crazy. So if it does that this Saturday, April 9, it will be a fantastic day for kites!
The 2011 Kite Festival will be held on Saturday, April 9 from 10 am to 4 pm (rain date is April 16), at Robby Ferrufino Park (74th & Carr).

How much is a community garden worth to Arvada?
Arvada Gardeners have been building community and providing food both for themselves AND the Arvada food bank in the same spot for over 40 years. Now, the City (AURA - Arvada Urban Renewal Authority) might take the property, for the benefit of private builders and the taxes it will bring in (an apartment complex).
Such a shame! A beautiful place that has been touted over and over again by local media, and the City of Arvada itself, is losing out to become … well … nothing special. Arvada will lose a piece … (4 comments)

Have you heard of Lagniappe? (Pronounced lawn-yahp)
Once a year, Olde Town Arvada businesses thank their loyal customers with small gifts. Some merchants will give a small token to anyone who stops in, such as cookies or hot chocolate. Some merchants will give small gifts with a purchase.
I looked up the word, 'lagniappe', and it has roots in French, Spanish and Creole tradition. Mark Twain wrote about this word in 'Life on the Mississippi'. Mr. Twain said it's pronounced 'lanny-yap', though.

Arvada Police Department offers Crime-Free Multi-Housing class November 10 from 8 am til 1 pm at Arvada City Hall, 8101 Ralston Rd.
The class is geared toward those who own or manage rental properties as well as real estate agents who work with rental property. Topics include landscaping and other design elements, gang activity, graffiti, narcotics, ways to work with police to make your property safer.
I took this class a couple of years ago and found it very informative. I have made some changes to the landscaping, and to the leases for my rental homes.
And it's free. How can you beat that?

about arvada: Household Trash Talk Between Denver and Boulder - 09/27/10 04:10 PM
I was raised in the Portland, Oregon area, where residents have to crush every object flat before they trash it, because they have such a limited amount that they can put out for collection. It's always seemed lazy and wasteful to take advantage of the fact that the amount of trash we put out every week here in Arvada Colorado is virtually unlimited.
But I've gotten used to it. I may have to learn some new tricks.
The City of Arvada, and other nearby cities, are planning to create city-wide trash collection policies.
This is a good thing.
